SATURDAY 12 MARCH 1994 THE AGE 35 Sport Age Why Nine can't cover all bases WasMiigitoini snaps up Gaze on 10-day contract New order poised to make mark in finals District cricket Youth team charges to third win By LAURIE SCHWAB The Young Socceroos recorded the third consecutive victory of their European tour by beating the youth team of Dutch club Wil-lem II 5-3 in a barnstorming finish after trailing 3-1 with 14 minutes to go. Mark Viduka of the Melbourne Knights scored his fifth goal in three matches when he equalised at 1-1 in the 15th minute after the first of countless crosses from left-back John Angelovski. But Willem II surged to a 3-1 lead before Australia fought back to win with goals by Robert Midd-leby (76th minute), Ufuak Talay (83rd), Paul Bilokapic (86th) and Nick Lazarevski (87th). The Young Socceroos had previously beaten Ajax Amsterdam 3-1 and Go Ahead Eagles 4-2. The next game is on Tuesday against the youth team of Borussia Dortmund, the German club of Australian World Cup player Ned Zelic.

THE COACH banished from the touchline for spitting at an opposition player during last week's UEFA Cup quarter-final between Austrian club Casinos Salzburg and Eintracht Frankfurt of Germany has said he is sorry, reports AAP. "Believe me, I regret this idiotic act and I suffer when I think of the incident," said 61-year-old Otto Baric, who spat at Frankfurt defender Kachaber Zachadse during an ill-tempered match. Baric was barred for five matches by the European Football Union (UEFA). PAUL WALSH'S proposed $1.5 million move from English first-division club Portsmouth to Manchester City of the Premier League has hit a snag. The former Tottenham and Liverpool striker has been reported to be not over-keen on the move.

Second-division side Blackpool has become only the second English league club to appoint a female managing director. Gill Bridge, 27, follows in the footsteps of Birmingham City's Kar-ren Brady. In his defence of the Nine Network's desultory coverage of cricket Tests in South Africa, Kerry Packer unwittingly put the unarguable case for pay-TV operators to get a fair share of sports broadcasts. The Australian Broadcasting Authority is investigating what events are of such national or cultural importance that broadcast rights should be available first to the free-to-air networks. Most of the candidates, it seems, are sports events.

The networks want an impregnable wall around all sports they are broadcasting now, shutting the fledgling pay-TV operators out of a vital market. The pay-TV operators argue that they can provide a complementary service, televising in full events that the networks televise in part or not at all. Here's what Packer had to say on Monday: "We've just gone through the Winter Olympics, we've come through with cricket from South Africa, we're in the middle of the football season. What do you think? The only people who should see anything on television are people who want to follow sport? You don't think we've got responsibilities to anybody else? We have a responsibility under licence to bring a balanced coverage." In other words, "we" have hoarded so many plum sports broadcast rights that fans should count themselves lucky they get a meaningful coverage of anything! As a contribution to the broadcasting authority's "pay-television siphoning" investigation well, Mr Packer, I couldn't have put it better myself. For years, fans' complaints about truncated or frivolous coverage of their favorite sports have gone largely unheeded by networks secure in the knowledge that they had no place else to go.

It may be unfair to come down too hard on the networks, who show a lot of sport and must, as Packer said, satisfy a range of tastes (although Channel 9 could obviously be less miserly with its sports rights). But the paucity of channels is coming to an end. Australis Media Will pay-TV bring more sport to the lounge lizard? Viewers have less than a fortnight to make their feelings known to the Australian Broadcasting Authority. Ben Potter reports: plans to offer 10 pay channels via satellite and MDS (multi-point distributions systems) from November; cable-TV services will offer 10 channels over Telecom's embryonic cable network from July. There will be no valid reason why those sessions of an Ashes or other cricket telecast that Nine fails to show should not be seen on pay-TV.

Section 115 of the Broadcasting Services Act rightly seeks to ensure that viewers will not be forced to pay for important sports broadcasts they now get free, such as the AFL and rugby league grand finals, state-of-origin clashes and cricket Tests. The Federation of Australia Commercial Television Stations argues not only that all sports now available free to air should remain available, but also that matches (say in AFL or rugby league) not televised free to air should not be available on pay-TV either! The reasoning behind this preposterous ambit claim is that siphoning of one or more matches to pay-TV would attract viewers from free-to-air broadcasts, harming their viability and reducing total free-to-air sports coverage. Sports siphoning will be a big issue, especially in the early years when few have access to pay-TV. But that does not warrant total protection from competition for sports viewers, especially given Packer's candid evidence on the networks' limitations. Tile ABA welcomes submissions until 25 March.

They should be sent to Director of Program Services, ABA. PO Box 500. Wellington, Friday Australian basketball star Andrew Gaze yesterday signed a 10-day contract to gfay with the Washington ullets. His first game with the Bullets will be against Djpiver tonight.

After practice with team members, the Melbourne Tiger's star said he was looking forward to playing in the presitigious National Basketball Association. "It is exciting being a part of the NBA and it is still a huge thrill," hcsaid. "My playing will be quite limited, though, because the team is very well established. I don't expect to come in and take over." Gaze's entry to the team was made possible by a series of injuries to Washington Bullets players including Colbert Chaney, who is expected to be back in two weeks. "I'm playing because they wanted to have a look at me and how I fit in with the team." Both Gaze and Bullets management are lookng at the 28-year-old with a view to possibly joining the team next year.

"They are not expecting me to set the world on fire on the next 10 days but to look at how I interact with the Bullets," Gaze said. Joining the NBA is yet another step up for the three-time Olympian who played a successful season five years with college team Seton Hall. "This is a great opportunity and I am realistic about how much playing I will get to do. Playing in the NBA is a long, long way up the ladder in terms of what is expected of you as a player. "But I am not overawed after playing at an international level with players of a similar calibre." The only other Australian playing in the NBA is Luc Longley from Perth who plays centre for the Chicago Bulls.

The Bullets will play Philadelphia in Washington on Sunday, then travel to the Wfest Coast for By GREG BAUM The inevitable shift In the power base of Victorian cricket should be confirmed this weekend when at least two, and probably three, so-called expansion clubs entrench themselves in the final four of the District competition. Fltzroy-Doncaster, formed In 1986 when ailing Fitzroy removed itself to the suburbs, leads the ladder and Is certain to play in the finals for the first time since amalgamation, Rlngwood lies third and Dandenong-Waverley (nee Waverley) fourth, and, barring accidents In this final round, should play in the finals. Inducted Into the competition in 1974 to embrace the outer suburbs, these clubs have each made only one previous, losing semi-final appearance, though they have both found success in the lower XIs. The other club Is Melbourne, which is blessed to be the title club, of the affluent and vibrant MCC organisation, and so has not grown old and poor like other Inner-city clubs. In any case, it protects Itself by recruiting vigorously all over the state.

Victorian Cricket Association chief executive Ken Jacobs said that It was generally agreed that 18 clubs was too many for an elite competition, but the success of the young clubs had been invigorating. "The good Judges say that the standard has been lowered, but it's been a fillip for the competition and the new clubs have played very well," Jacobs said. "A lot of the older, traditional clubs are going to continue to face problems over the next few years." They Include a lack of funds, players and administrators, and the increasing reluctance of inner suburban councils to devote ovals exclusively to cricket. The two new clubs In the competition this season, Geelong and Frankston-Penlnsula, lie 12th and last respectively, but have not been disgraced, winning nine games between them. Andrew Gaze: 'I am not overawed after playing at an international level with players of a similar calibre.

Gaze will return to Australia in preparation for the Melbourne Tigers' opening game on 9 April. games at Golden State (15 March), against the Los Angeles Lakers (16 March), in Portland (18 March) and Denver (20 March). Gaze, typically a high point scorer, said he could offer the Bullets diversity and versatility to play a range of positions. "They want to see my potential and how flexible I am as the team has a lot of strong players in my Melbourne Keas easily deflect Bullets Netball Slick newcomers Melbourne Keas tasted their first victory in the Netball Superleague, beating the Perth Bullets 72-43 at the Powerhouse in Adelaide last night.

Aided by Australian wing attack Shelley O'Donnell and defender Nicole Richardson, Melbourne established itself as a competent addition to the Superleague. Melbourne goaler Yolanda Wightman's precise shooting (80 per cent) steered Melbourne to a 17-goal lead at half-time. Perth, last year's Superleague wooden spooner, had the pace and fought valiantly for the ball but opportunities were lost with only five of her 10 chances. Despite a fairly even start, Melbourne pulled away after Perth missed two straightforward shots in the second quarter. The third quarter became more aggressive, with Melbourne goalkeeper Liz Taverner taking a heavy fall.

In the second game, Adelaide Contax powered to a nail-biting 50-47 win against local arch-rival Garville. Contax was boosted by three newcomers in wing attack Audine Cobb, Queenslander Vicki Neale and Australian squad member Vicki Wilson. Wilson's 184-centimetre frame provided strength, goal precision and 36 goals. The win was an important confidence booster for Contax, which has played in the shadow of Garville since 1991. "I think it's the start of good things to come," Contax coach Marg Angoves said.

Contax led marginally throughout but in the third quarter the score was levelled three times. MELBOURNE KEAS 72 (L Mackie 31 Wight-man 41) PERTH BULLETS 43 (S Gough 29 A Parker 9 A Wheeler 5). The main contenders are Dandenong Waverley, Richmond and Prahran.

To keep their respective hopes alive, Richmond would have to beat Melbourne at Albert Park; Prahran, at home, would need to thrash Frankston Peninsula, and DandenongWaverley would have to beat Collingwood at Shepley Oval.
