WEDNESDAY 20 DECEMBER 1995 THE AGE 19 Accent Edited by SONIA HARFORD Sonic Youth's feminist lyrics put a new spin on rock music. Bass player Kim Gordon spoke to Sonia Harford before an Australian tour. neW3File SONIA HARFORD Kim Gordon rocks a male music world nzgp fi 1 i do like to write from my experience, or what I'm interested in as a woman' I AWARDS made to women and family-friendly companies for their achievements in 1995 have recently been announced. Many women have been scrutinising the performance of Australia's big companies, like BHP, in relation to equal opportunity, so the recent awards given for work and family policies are illuminating. The Council for Equal Opportunity in Employment recently gave Esso Australia its Gold Corporate Work and Family Award.

The council said Esso's flexible work and leave practices benefited employees, with provisions for child and aged care. Other award winners included American Express, Alcoa, Australia Post and the Taxation Office. DONNA Ritchie, captain of Australia's Women's Wheelchair Basketball team, has won The Avon Spirit of Achievement Award for women, which donates $15,000 to a cause of her choice. Ms Ritchie lost the use of her legs at 23, and has since become an internationally recognised name in wheelchair sport. Business and Professional Women Victoria named architect Zarinan Gurrie as its 1995 Woman of the year.

She successfully oversees practices in Asia and Gee-long. NOT forgetting the Sisters in Crime Scarlet Stiletto Awards for crime and mystery stories written by women. Last year's winner Cate Kennedy, from Daylesford, continued her stranglehold on the award, winning first and second prize this year. The under-25 award was a surprise eight-year-old Sydney girl Carolyn Harding-Smith won, for her story "The Axe-Murderer Casualty COUPLES who are trying to get pregnant or trying not to may need to change the rhythm of their method, according to a new study. Researchers report in a recent New Bug-land Journal of Medicine that the highest probability of pregnancy each month occurs during a six-day period ending on the day of ovulation a time frame several days earlier and considerably shorter than conventional wisdom dictates.

Allen J. Wilcox, head of the research team at the National Institute of Environ-mental Health Sciences in North Carolina, said: our data seem to indicate that the day of ovulation is the end of the fertile time, not the middle of it." KIM GORDON may be the most hip female rock musician of her generation. She's a 40-year-old mother, married to a guitarist in her band, and a feminist. The male-dominated nature of rock music has long been summed up by the memorable phrase "cock-rock" but instead of thrusting her ego, Gordon sings about sexism, anorexia and teenage pregnancy. With few role models to aspire to, she has become one herself.

Rock and roll has always been a man's game, with a few notable female exceptions, from lanis loplin onwards. When Patti Smith and Chrissie Hynde strapped on guitars, they bred a new generation of cool, rocking girls in bands like the Slits, Bikini Kill and the Breeders. Kim Gordon is bass player and a singer with one of the USA's most respected bands, Sonic Youth, considered to have reached a career high point in 1995, and due to play in Melbourne this month. Gordon has taken on male bias, achieving a synthesis of musical credibility and feminist clout. Her song Tunic (Song for Karen) is a rock requiem to Karen Carpenter, the sweet-voiced drummer-singer who starved herself to death.

Sung by Gordon, the lyrics hauntingly capture the weird self-image of a young women with anorexia: feel like I'm disappearing, getting smaller every day but I look in the mirror, and I'm bigger in every way Another green salad, another iced tea there's a tunic in the closet, waiting just for me, Gordon rails against the perennial media stereotyping that requires women performers to look young, great and desirable. "There are such double standards for men and women, and if critics didn't always talk about how women looked, if that wasn't such an issue, I think it would be a lot better. "You have people like Courtney Love (from the band Hole) who gets a boob Job and a nose job and wants to become a bimbo, basically she sees Feminist rock singer Kim Gordon: a role model for girl groups. Sonic Youth somersaults into Melbourne this month. blitzes sexual harassment.

Gordon's angry vocals, backed up by fuzzy guitars and a frantic drum beat, snarl at the male executive who wields the most pernicious power. I'm just here for dictation, I don't want to be a sensation Don't touch my breasts, I'm just working at my desk. "I do like to write from my experience, or what I'm interested in as a woman," says Gordon. "I do feel that because a lot of people listen to the lyrics, it's a good opportunity to say things that need pointing out." It helps to have a feminist husband. Interviewed by a sassy US girls' magazine Bust, Gordon's husband Thurston Moore said his feminist consciousness was shaped by "eyewitness accounts" living with Gordon and hanging around with women.

On the phone from Minneapolis mid-way through a US tour, Gordon is weary late at night. She takes her daughter Coco on tour, and it's a gruelling schedule. In many ways, Gordon's family life and career path reveal her to be a true woman of the '90s. As many women strive to have it all children, a partner, a job, and fun she demands that women be who they are. If they want to look beautiful, and wear tight clothes, fine.

What Gordon's arguing for is a place where women can choose can be the pretty performer without being seen as vacuous. "I think Chrissie Hynde (from The Pretenders) was really influenced by guys, and' really wanted to be like a guy. Or a tomboy. And someone like Kim Deal (from The Breeders) is just totally different, she's just like who she is. She makes herself look pretty, but she's just naturally who she is." In the past, said Gordon, she felt pressure to fit in with the boys in the band, to prove her skills, rather than be regarded as a cute token girl singer.

How the confidence has grown. In a video clip for the album Goo, Gordon and husband Thurston Moore kiss. Passionately. What we're watching is a married couple in love, and turned on, and showing it, which is, in the cynical, image-conscious, music industry, quite revolutionary. Art and music, fashion and family, feature large in Gordon's world.

She began work in New York art galleries soon after leaving college, and has continued to be inspired by forms other than music. Most recently, she was asked by the Beastie Boys band's Mike to set up a girls' clothing label, X-Girl, to complement his boys' X-Large range. Together with Daisy von Furth, Gordon held a street fashion parade of brightly colored T-shirts, skirts and jeans, which was produced by Sophia Coppola (Francis Ford's daughter), and included Linda Evangelista in the audience. In optimistic mood, she told Amy Raphael: "It maybe is easier for me now, as a woman, to do something like a clothes line without being seens as vacuous." With fame comes influence, and the admiration of many young female musicians. Gordon has even visited Melbourne's Rock 'N' Roll High School for girls.

"It's a lot of responsibility though, which is a hit alarming," she says. "It's so easy for things to be misconstrued. It's like with the clothes line things would come sometimes too small, sometimes too big, and then we would get accused of making clothes for certain weights. That wasn't the intention." Sonic Youth, Bikini Kill and Beastie Boys perform at the Summersault concert, Melbourne Showgrounds, on 29 December. Bookings: Bass, Augogo, Gaslight, Missing Link, Polyester, Gre-ville Records.

The Washing Machine CD is on the Geffen label. that as being a point of power, and to be able to use her sexuality as a strength. But she doesn't look at it like a trap. I think she's a victim of it. I wouldn't have surgery.

"I'm sure she likes looking good, but it's that thing that you forget why it is you want to be liked is it for your looks? You forget that you're doing it because you want to be loved." In her book Never Mind the Bollocks: Women Rewrite Rock, author Amy Raphael says the music of Kim Gordon and others of her generation is "informed by contempt for the marketing values and image-making ploys" of a male-dominated music industry, which defines women as the "rock chick" or according to traditional notions of This is multiplied many times over through ubiquitous television video clips. Gordon finds the industry monopolised by men, from record company executives to talent scouts and the music press: "I could name a number of men in their mid-30s who people rarely discuss in terms of age," says Gordon. The music press, she says, is as narrow as many other layers of society. "There was this reviewer it was actually a positive review but he was saying how my singing style on the record had exploded or something into a three-headed monster. I found it kind of odd, why would he think of a three-headed monster? Why is that the term used for a woman? I think it's because people are afraid of women I guess because they're afraid of what they can't understand." Gordon's feminism, with the support of the three men in the band, is given a strong, effective airing in her lyrics.
