Monday and Tues- SWC Baseballers Are Faring Badly By The Associated Press Four Southwest Conference baseball teams have opened the season and done poorly indeed. Southern Methodist and Texas Christian each has won two oui of four. They mot each other twice last week and split the series. Texas A and and Baylor are winless. Texas and Rice, the other conference members playing baseball, swing into action this week, Tex as, opening with Sam Houston State at Austin Monday and Tuesday and Rice taking on Texas Tech at Houston Tuesday.

Sam Houston State has been tough to handle. Southern Methodist started off by beating the Bear- kats 2-1 March 1 but since then Sam Houston has beaten SMU once and Baylor twice. Texas A and was to have played Sam Houston two games last week but had to cancel them because of bad weather. TCU split with Texas Lutheran at Seguin Saturday, taking the first game 3 -0 but losing the second 7-6. Baylor was trimmed by San Houston 7-2 and 9-0.

UP) Pitch.er Early Wynn of the Cleveland Indians would like to hit the 300- victory mark before he quits. At 37, the odds would seem against the talented right-hander's becoming the first to reach that coveted goal since Bob Grove finished with 300 in 1941. Wynn has 221 decisions, spanning 15 seasons since his first verdict as a Washington Senator in 1941. He needs 79 more to do the trick accomplished by only an even dozen mound stars, most of them of ancient vintage. "It's a long way to go, but I'd like to try," Wynn said today.

"I don't feel like I'm in the grave yet." This was in rebuttal to conjecture around the American League that Wynn and 36-year-old Bob Lemon may succumb to age. The two, with youthful Herb Score, each registered 20 victories last year. Wynn, who has not won fewer than 17 games a season since 1949, certainly appears to have found a private fountain of youth. In hi past five Tribe seasons, he has registered 100 triumphs against ony 155 defeats. The secret may be his intense conditioning program which rivals that of now retired Indian ace Bob Feller, who hung up his glove this year with a lifetime record of 266-162.

Wynn now stands 221170. "For the past five or six years, have pitched batting practice five or six times a week and done at least an hour's running each day in spring training," Wynn explained. Tar Heels Tops, Mustangs Fifth In Final Rating NEW YORK, March 11 magnificent North Carolina Tarheels, newly crowned national champions of college basketball for 1956-57, now seek to carve out a unique spot in hoop history for themselves. The Tarheels, only major ur- seaten five in the country, were unchallenged for the top ispot in the final 'International News Serv- ce weekly nationwide survey. Their 27 and 0 record enabled Tarheels to throw mto the heap the regular season record of 25 and 0 set by Kentucky In 1953-54 and equaled by San Francisco's national champs of last year.

However, the Dons went on to second straight NCAA title and thus lifted their record to 29 and 0. If North Carolina wins he NCAA crown, it will have to defeat five opponents, raising its to 32 and 0. Such a feat would give North Carolina four tremendous accom- lishments for the year a na- lona! championship, and NCAA itle, a new regular season winning nark and a new over-all season vinning mark. North Carolina starts on Its momentous quest Tuesday in New ork when it plays Yale in the pening round of the NCAA East- rn regionals. There were no new additions to ne top 20 for the final week of he INS survey.

With the NCAA pening Tuesday and the NIT tailing Saturday, here are the inal ratings: 1. North Carolina (27-01; 2 Kanas (21-2); 3. Kentucky (22-4); Seattle (22-2); 5. Southern (21-3); 6. U.C.L.A 7.

Port Arthur and Smiley of the South won the Class AAAA and Class AAA titles respectively. White Oak, Buna and Big Sandy of the east took the Class AA, Class A and Class crowns. West Texas, which had won one title In 1956, was shut out. Records And Drama The state tournament produced records and drama, the latter provided by Big Sandy of Dollards- ville, the team that won the state championship in the memory of its coach's wife.

Mrs. Ford King died of cancer in November and the boys pledged that they would win the title in her memory as well as making It a monument to King, who is retiring as coach after 18 years of leading the Indian boys from the Alabama-Coushatta reservation. Big Sandy, led by the great Oscar Williams, who scored 31 points, beat Meadow 80-59 in the finals for this school's second championship in seven trips to the state tournament. Port Arthur won the grand prize Class AAAA championship. The Yellow Jackets lashed Pampa 67-51 for their first title.

Smiley, led by its 7 foot 1-2 inch center, Lewis Quails, took the Class AAA crown with a 52-35 decision over Pecos. Buna Record Now 66 Buna ran up the greatest record in tlie longest winning streak of all time in Texas schoolboy basketball when it downed Seminole 74-43 for the Class AA title. Buna had won two Class A championships in a row before moving up a class this year. This team now has won 66 straight games. White Oak whipped McGregor 66-51 for the Class A championship.

The feature of the tournament was a 51-point spree by Don Stanley of Buna as he set an all-time record for a player in one game. For once not a single final game was close. There were at least 15 points separating the teams in all five games. Buna won by the widest points. Big Sandy won by 21.

Big Sandy's 80 points in beating Meadow was the highest total ever run up in the Class championship game by one team. Williams' 31 points also was a new individual scoring mark for the title game. RATLIFF HOUSTON from the horrors of war and oppression John Macy, a slim young Pole beats a championship rhythm on the cinder path while seeking to earn the niche in life America guarantees one who wants to try.

His name IB quite different in his native country but it's bettor for all concerned that ne use a nomenclature that already has become known on the big-time tracks of the United States. Jolts Indoor Stars The 26-year-old former second lieutenant in the Polish Army leaped to prominence when he started beating some of the best America had to offer on the indoor tracks of the East. Macy won the national AAU indoor 3-mile in the second fastest time ever run in Madison Square Garden 13:57.4. Previously he had loped two miles in the best time ever recorded by a college freshman 8:57.5. The story of John Macy and how he came to the University of Houston reads like fiction.

In 1054 he went to Switzerland with a Polish Army track team to compete in a meet at Bern. The second day there he sought out the American counsul and asked asylum. He was sent to West Germany, where he worked with the U.S. iArmy while awaiting permission to enter America. A year and a half later he got it and went to Buffalo, where a cousin, who had adopted the name Macy, resides.

He got a job with a smelter plant at Lackawana. Macy entered a few races In the spring of 1956 and attracted the attention of the New York Athletic Club. He joined the team and that's how track Coach John Morriss of Houston came across him. Morriss Impressed Bakersfield, Morriss At saw him drop out midway In 10,000 meters of the national AAU outdoor meet.
