He is regarded as assured of re-election with the support of Government members in return for the backing his small Independent Labor group has always given the Government. This leaves the situation where the Government, if it supports its retiring members and Mr Cahill, is left with only one seat to fill, that left by Sir Hector Clayton.

For this there will be a big field, and among the front-runners must be ex-Lord Mayor Sir Emmet McDermott, because of his outstanding record in that office and his status in the business world.
