Prices of materials and services. have increased so much that most house holders are forced to do something to keep the family budget balanced.

The answer is for them to get busy themselves on essential home repair and maintenance jobs. So do-it-yourself is the order of the day. Thousands of people who before the war would never have dreamed of doing such work are now happily at work in their spare time with paint brush, hammer and saw. This has encouraged manufacturers to give attention to home handymen and women. A glance at practically any paint advertisement bears this out.

There has also been a revolution in the humble home workshop or "tool shed" as it used to be called. From a jumbled heap of mixed tools tossed carelessly into a large chest, has come methodically arranged "peg boards" holding a wide range of hand tools. Side by side with these are neat shelves and racks for supplies such as nails, screws, bolts. and many other hardware items. The most important development, however, has been the introduction of a comprehensive range of power tools, and there is much discussion about the best type to buy.

For the homeworker who specialises in woodwork there are combination machines that will rip, plane, and sandpaper timber, besides serving as a lathe and drill press. These are ideal where space is limited. On the other hand, some handymen prefer to buy individually motorised units as funds permit. Such an arrangement does away with the need for alter, ing a machine for various functions. Of course all this equipment is of little use without the "know how" for operating it, and one development has been the big increase in the number of people eager to enter evening colleges where handcrafts are taught.

Men and women of all ages and in every walk of life are to be found there, and their enthusiasm for such crafts as woodwork, weaving, pottery, millinery, leatherwork, basketware, and cake decorating is infectious. Retail stores and magazines are also devoting more and more space and attention to this aspect of the "do-it-yourself" vogue. 1 491 OOQ, St SEE IT ALL DEMONSTRATIONS, EXHIBITIONS, LIVE WINDOWS SAVE MONEY AND "DO IT YOURSELF" Can't is i vord we Just don't know at Nock and Kirby's.
