K. J. Just when you think spring is here, a new norther comes around the corner and last week we had an inch of rain. We are not complaining about the rain. Oats are looking fine and people over here are busy planting coastal Bermuda.

It is a slow process to plant those sprigs by hand, but with the new machines, that put out fertilizer and sprigs at the same time, it's really a pleasure to see it work. Paul Gregg, entomologist, looked over the peach orchards and reported lots of peaches. Gave instructions to spray, which we did on Monday. The men spraying reported a good crop. Wednesday's appearance of those fat, fluffy snowflakes should go a long way toward reviving the ground hog's reputation. And there is something else we would like to call to the attention of the ambitious gardeners who have their gardens planted before we even have our soil thundered in That means, of course, that we will have a freeze (well, at least a cold spell on the corresponding day in April. What does February have to do with April weather? Well, we can't explain it but this unerring bit of information has been of immense aid to us for years.

It helps us resist the urge to get out of a comfortable lawn chair and turn the soil when a balmy March day unexpectedly presents itself. One can always manage to recall (at least vaguely) having heard thunder in February. Anyway if it doesn't work out that way and all of the neighbors are eating crisp, naturally ripened vegetables before our garden is even prepared for planting then, so much the better. That's even a more acceptable reason for mowing, instead of hoeing, the garden plot this year. So much'for the if we can Just devise a way to avoid the annual battle against the ever-growing lawn of grass and out-maneuver a wife intent on having an early bed of petunias.
