Page 32 The Sydney Morning Herald, Friday, April 10, 1981 A six-week thirty-one two-year-olds have gone Into the Golden Slipper with unblemished records, but only six have emerged unbeaten from the sprint in its 24-year history. Can Crown Jester, unbeaten in fire races, make It the Magnificent Seven" tomorrow? I feel confident that he can. Todman set the ball rolling when he won the inaugural Golden frustrating than the 1973 debacle when Imagele fell at the home turn. Imagele, unbeaten in his six previous starts, went into the Slipper almost unbackable at 9-4 on. His misfortune is a sobering thought for those who regard Crown Jester as a "past the post" proposition.

He was hailed immediately as a "freak The other five winners Who emerged unbeaten from the Slipper are Sky High (1960), Vain (1969), Baguette (1970), John's Hope (1972) and Toy Show (1975). Levy will return to the centres for Penrith's match with North Sydney at Penrith Park on Sunday.

Levy, despite seven stitches near his eye, said last night that he would be fit by Sunday. Norths had good and bad news at training last night Steve Mayob, the prop, has withdrawn because of fluid on the knee. But John Gray, their hooker and captain, is recovering rapidly from torn rib cartilages and is expected to resume his place. Norths will play Peter Cross at prop and Rod Henniker in the second-row. A gloomy Western Suburbs camp will announce their team tonight for the match with Can-terbury-Bankstown at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday.

Wests have four first graders out. Ted Goodwin, the centre, broke his right arm in three places during the Tooth Cup match this week, John McLeod has a fractured cheekbone, Jim Leis is suffering from a mystery virus, and John Donnelly was sidelined for 14 weeks by the judiciary. In Brisbane, Winfield announced yesterday a three-, year sponsorship deal with the' Queensland Rugby League that will ensure the success of next year's State League competition. No breakdown of figures was available, but Mr Des Hancock, Winfield's Queensland manager, predicted that the sponsorship could rise as high as $750,000 after the three-year term expired. The State League will comprise the eight Brisbane clubs, the Gold Coast and Ave country divisions.

By RUSSELL ELDRIDGE Royce Ayliffe, the Eastern Suburbs captain, was suspended last night for six weeks by the NSW Rugby League judiciary committee. Ayliffe was found guilty of the charge of a head-high tackle on a player not in possession of the ball. He will return for the match with St George' at the Sports Ground on May24. The hearing was adjourned on Monday night when Ayliffe said he wanted to call Mark Levy as a witness. Levy was the Penrith player Ayliffe tackled before being sent off in the match at the Sports Ground lust Sunday.

Ayliffe maintained that the point of contact of his tackle was at shoulder height and that he pulled away once he saw Levy did not have the balL But, despite Levy's evidence last night that he did not believe there malice in the tackle and that he was "hurt very the judiciary agreed with the touch judge's report that the point of contact was at throat level. Ayliffe made a brusque "no comment" after the hearing. Mr Jim Comans, the chairman of the judiciary, said in handing down the sentence that the results of head-high tackles could be serious "and must be He indicated that Ayliffe's record counted for and against him. Mr Comans pointed out that Ayliffe, who entered first grade in 1976, had been sent off twice in 1978 and twice in 1979. ail apper wft.

John Jeffs, the Sydney Turf Club racecourse decided this after an inspection of the Slippei course late yesterday afternoon. "It is a massive job to shift the running rail right around the track at such late notice," Mr Jeffs said.

"I will bring 15 of the Canterbury track staff over to Rosehill tomorrow morning to get the job done. "I decided to move out the rail to get over the worst parts after I walked around the track this afternoon. "If it had been left in the original position there was a good chance that the runners on the fence would have been bogged down. "The worst parts are between the 1,200 metres and 800 metres." AH races will be run over the correct distances. Mr Jeffs predicts that the Slipper will be run in about Imin 1 Is if there is no further rain.

Jack Ingham, the owner-breeder, and Mark De Montfort, the jockey, discounted last night reports that they were not happy with Crown Jester's final workout at Rosehill yesterday morning. "I am as happy as Larry. He felt as good as gold. The colt went as well as I expected him to," De Montfort said. "Because of the track I sent him three-quarter pace on purpose early. He came home the last 600 metres at a working gallop. I could not be happier," De Montfort said. I select Crown Jester to win because I consider he is too strong and too fast for his rivals.

The Slipper will be run at blistering speed, with fast horses drawn on the inside and outside of the barrier. I expect Crown Jester to contain all the speed runners and, if he is to be beaten, it should be by a strong finisher. The two whom I respect most in this category are Domino and Rose of Kingston. Domino has been tuned to the minute to give Cunsynd his most prestigious success as a sire. He worked strongly on the course proper at Kembla Grange yesterday morning, running home the last 600 metres in 35.75s with the flags out 10 metres.

Bob Hoysted is quietly confident that Rose of Kingston will run a bold race. "I wish the race was 1,400 metres instead of 1,200 metres, but I expect her to finish in the first five and I do know she will come charging home in the closing stages," Hoysted said. Although Katholos is in the 22, Gutendorf admitted that there was not much chance of his being included in the 16-man squad to go to New Zealand for the first qualifying match on April 25.

Gutendorf said: "It's a bit late now to start making changes, but he is still a good chance to make the later games." The Australian squad left camp yesterday, but they will go straight back into training I in on out much so that he has won himself a spot in Australia's World Cup squad. Rudi Gutendorf, the national coach, has included the talented Katholos in the list of 22 names to be submitted to FIFA, the world controlling body, for the World Cup. That's not a bad comeback for the youngster who switched to Sydney Olympians at the start of the season after an in-and-out season with St George last year. Gutendorf was full of praise last night for Katholos, who' toured with the Australian under-19 team to Paraguay in 1978. stance and "I'm kind of comfortable with He said that since arriving here he had made some technical changes to his swing and "I've got back the 20 or 30 yards I lost this The alteration in his putting stance, he said, became necessary because his performance on the greens earlier this year was "very I missed too many short He said the course was in exceptional shape and, apart from the third and sixth greens, the new putting surfaces laid down since last year were excellent.

Nicklaus, who shares the course record with Floyd at 271, warned his rivals: "If they're going to break 271, they'd better do it this year because this is their last chance." Floyd, the hottest player on the tour, agreed. "Little things are being done each year to make the course more difficult," he said. 1 1 wu AUGUSTA (Georgia), Thursday. Jack Nicklaus is relying on an old putting style to carry him to his sixth win in the United States Masters golf championship, which begins here today. "I think I'm playing reasonably well," Nicklaus, the US Open and PGA champion, said after his practice round yesterday.

The "Golden Bear" is among the favourites to win the title, along with fellow Americans Ray Tom Watson and Johnny Miller and, the foreign challengers David Graham (Australia) and Spain's Severiano Ballesteros. Nicklaus, 41, said he had changed his swing since last month's Tournament Players' championship, the last event he played in. He had also altered his putting stance back to bis old FINANCE aWTITlV The race jockey Graham Robson, left, the strapper Jamie De Belin, and the trainer Albert McKenna watch at Palbi Lodge, Randwick, yesterday as the Golden Slipper hope Black Shoes is weighed at 450kg. Luck tips scales for the Shoes By ALAN SPEERS Weight's right for Black Shoes, the 15.1 hands high filly aiming to try on a Golden Slipper at Rosehill tomorrow. Amid the welter of words written about his filly, the trainer Albert McKenna came up with a new vital statistic yesterday.

"She weighed in today at the same weight, 450kg, as before she won the Blue Diamond Makes, McKenna said last night. "I like to think that's a lucky omen." Alan Pureed, a Herald photo grapher, was privy to the weighing, in ceremony at McKenna's Rand' wick stables. The filly stood calmly on the converted cattle scales. McKenna said the novel weighing method was simply another guide to a horse's fitness. "Horses lose from 2kg to 3kg with every race, and the machine tells me when they have picked up condition again, he said.

"It's not infallible, bat it helps. "Harry Wrlgg, the English jockey who rode for the Queen and who is now training, recommended the scales to me. "I don't weigh all my horses, only the better ones and those who might be worrying me." Black Shoes, although she is not big, is about 25kg heavier than other fillies of the same height, according to the trainer a weighty argument for the big race spurs after the weekend's PSL round. Arsenal, the English first division Soccer club, are insisting on a SI million injury cover for their striker Alan Sunderland before they release him to play for Brisbane Lions the PSL. If the Sunderland deal falls through, Brisbane Lions will make an attempt to secure the Everton striker Bob Latchford.

Tonight's World of Soccer Channel 028 at 6.30 will feature the first TV appearance together of Rudi Gutendorf and Rale Rasic, along with Tommy Docherty. Docherty 'babe' NRMA 16th PROSPECTUS By RAY GATT A few people may consider that the coach Tommy Docherty has not done all that much for Sydney Olympians, the Philips League Soccer club. However, one can rest assured that Peter Katholos, the young midfielder, is not one of them. Katholos, 20, probably more than anyone else, has benefitted greatly from Doch-erty's vast experience.
