IF HOE IOT2f an off day Simon shines, but for the rest, it was The most exciting aspect of Ten's new show Off The Dish is that it represents an energetic and serious commitment to children's television one that before was largely delegated to Simon Townsend of Wonder World. Ten approached Ian Fairweather, presenter and producer of Here's Humphrey and creator of the award-winning Curiosity Show, to look at its children's programming. Ian decided that there was very little on television which was suitable for eight- to 10-year-old children at four in the afternoon, so he worked on the idea of a studio-based magazine program which is topical, with stories from around Australia endeavours, I must say the preview episode fell flat. The set, which is large, lacked warmth and the presenters. Cameron Daddo and Simon Watt, tried too hard at times.

There were good elements such as a book review of Five Times Dizzy, by way of an informal discussion, by a young girl. But this segment needs to be more articulate, and structured to give children an incentive to read the book. Another feature, the telling by Fiona MacDonald of a serialised story, missed the mark. This may have been because the story wasn't gripping enough and the scenes dramatising the plot too bland. Perhaps Off The Dish is going through a teething stage, but with 48 episodes promised for this year it will need to improve quickly if it is to hold its intended viewers.

The Wonder World segment was by comparison much more slick and professional and engaged the viewers well. It is far better that Townsend has just the half hour; the segment is freshly made and thus has greater immediacy. With Townsend established in the minds of children, I'm not convinced, however, that there is a need to sign off the hour with the return of the Off the Dish presenters. Deirdre Macpherson OFF THE DISH On 10 at 4 pm. and the world via satellite dish.

Instead of an hour of Simon Townsend, Off The Dish has the first half-hour, starting at 4 pm, with the second half-hour introducing a new-look Simon Townsend. Winston, a sulphur-crested cockatoo, now sits arrogantly on his right as Simon makes nervous attempts to stroke him, while Woodrow, his dog, looks on mournfully. The presenters of the then return to wrap the hour up. Loath as I am to dampen new V4 Young Off The Dish host, Gwen Soares Overture; Weber, Clarinet Con ens: Praise the Lord. 12.15 These Times.
