iKlilt THE HUMBLE koala has become a highly hottin asp THIS BABY died last year. Ten weeks later he was born, and last weekend he was as healthy as a baby can be in his muni's arms. Anthony Barton was brought back to his life by a massage after he had technically died. Doctors massaged his mother's abdomen, triggering Anthony's heartbeat. They pressed 40 times a minute for three minutes before the tiny heart came back to life.

Anthony was born six weeks prematurely in a Caesarian operation in November, weighing 2kg. After eight weeks in an incubator and four blood transfusions he left with his mother, Pauline, for their South London home. population than all the effusive politicians and speech-making officials in the land. And the Japanese are striving to do the right thing with typical resourcefulness. For several years now they've been experimenting with growing eucalyptus leaves to make sure koalas will have the right food.

When the koalas are finally delivered, they'll probably have to hire a Jumbo jet to accommodate the politicians wanting to get in on the act. But NSW Premier Wran will have a chance to gain an edge when he welcomes Tokyo's Governor on his visit here from May 8 to 12. KEVIN PERKINS little fellow has already proved himself top of the popularity tree in Santiago Zoo in southern California, where the koala is so charismatic the zoo has adopted him as the zoo's official symbol. Everywhere we went in Japan, smiling people brought up the subject of koalas from Governor Shunichi Suzuki to Tokyo taxi-drivers. Against that, the koala so naturally attractive that he can be nothing but a splendid ambassador and will do more to create interest in Australia among the huge Japanese iW i THE ARTLESS BOY GEORGE YOU wouldn't think anyone would be scared of Boy George.

But presidential hopeful Gary Hart was and it could have been the political blunder of his life. Boy George and the Boy Wonder were staying at the same New York hotel (on different levels of course) when it was suggested they get together for a photo session. Hart went as white as George's make-up. He was afraid his Democratic rival. Walter Mondale.

might use a photo to paint Hart as some kind of freak. But the next day Hart might have been forgiven for kicking himself. Boy George had won New York's heart. And not just hard-bitten New York: the blue-collar hard-hats of the Pittsburgh steel industry have taken to him as well. Boy George and Gary Hart political animal, so to speak, both here and in Japan.

Not only are our poli ticians falling over themselves to be first to ship the long-protected koalas to Japan, but politicians and officials there are going out on a limb to climb on the bandwaggon. I learned, while on a Japan Air Lines background tour as a pipe-opener to Tokyo Governor Suzuki's visit to Sydney next month, that Japanese officials are prepared to show their claws to be first to clutch our koalas. Seven Japanese zoos applied for the furry animals when the Australian Government decided to lift its ban on exporting koalas. Three zoos were finally selected but when it was learned that Tama Zoo outside Tokyo would receive the' first shipment, windows rat- IN THE welter of advice and books on how to handle stress, two Melbourne psychologists have come up with what they claim is a problem-solving formula. In their paperback You and Stress (Nelson, Dr Bob Montgomery and colleague Lynette Evans call the procedure a checklist or perhaps a "road It consists of six major steps which work their way from defining the problem to examining possible solutions, tied in Tokyo diplomatic and Government circles as officials asserted their authority behind the scenes.

Tokyo officials felt that as they represented the capital, they should be first and this is is probably the way it will work out when the first koalas go to Japan in September or October. In Japan, koalas are looked upon with the same kind of excitement as the first shipment of pandas from China 12 years ago. The Tokyo zoo housing them has doubled its yearly visits from four to eight million. Not only will the presence of our sleepy little animals mean an addi- tional income of several million dollars to the lucky zoo, but the koala kudos will be enormous. If you doubt the pull- ing power of koalas, the How to simplify stress guide even simplifies the stress of analysing stress! In other chapters, the book gives advice on total relaxation, tuning up the body and recreation, how to be more assertive, communicating, managing time, insomnia, depression, loneliness and job redesign.
