iui i i i rv iw Arizona RcpublicTHE PHOENIX GAZETTE July 27, 1 990 A in IS 1W Miss Arizona Teen USA ends Community Comment in national contest Tax bill Is too big No, no, no. A report was issued by CD. Bishop, state superintendent of public instruction, and it found that our money spent on education did not measure up to the national average. Now we homeowners are expected to shell out more money so teachers can have a bonus to pay for insurance. I have to pay for health insurance also.

My employer did not give me a bonus to help me pay my insurance. The tax bill is too big. Cut the fat and stop beating the homeowner to death! Mr. and Mrs. V.

Gura Glendale Mi mi I iii nun u.i i.j in m.mmmfr ,1 vw to district employees: We appreciate an opportunity to state our views. We voted against the override. Why can't the Glendale Union High School District manage to live within its budget? We, as taxpayers, are supposed to live within our budget range but are somehow supposed to be an ever-flowing well from which anyone and everyone might draw. I didn't argue with the scare tactics the district used at the time of the election. And I feel that this $1,000 windfall to each employee only validates that.

If there's money left over, save it. The justification in the July 20 Arizona Republic suggests that the $1,000 is a savings in that the teachers asked for a 5 percent raise and were only given 4 percent. It appears to us, based on an average salary of $30,000 a year, that the $1,000 is an increase of an additional 3 to 4 percent. This gives them their 5 percent for three to four years, at which time they'll call, undoubtedly, for another increase in salary. Throwing money at education does not improve the quality of the education or the ability of the district to manage it.

John and Ann Sullivan Glendale Wants guarantees I feel deceived! I voted for the tax increase because the administrators and faculty lied and deceived the public into believing drastic cuts of basic education and educational-enriching activities would be severely restricted andor eliminated. Hundreds of labor days by administrators and faculty were erroneously channeled into this self-serving interest at the expense of educating students. They will have to provide written guarantees before I vote for another self-serving initiative for them. D. Riggan Phoenix Express Yourself Get involved with your community.

Our goal for the Community section, and especially for this page, is an open exchange of ideas and opinion. Your letters are the key ingredient in that mix, and we welcome them indeed, we're counting on them. Let us know what's on your mind. Letters should include your name, address and day in top 12 1st time in finals for state entrant Bob Jackson Special to Community GLENDALE Entering a beauty pageant was the furthest thing from Jerilynn Beatty's mind when the Glendale teenager accompanied her mother to enter her 18-month-old brother, Kyle, in a local pageant four years ago. As Beatty recalls, they were waiting for the competition to begin when the contest director asked if she was a contestant.

The high school sophomore replied that she wasn't in the contest, and the director encouraged her to enter. "That's all she needed to hear' said Beatty's mother, Vicki Ramsey. "The next thing I knew, she took off with my shoes, got a few things together and entered the contest." After a. few hours on stage, Jerilynn returned home with a first-place trophy. Four years and dozens of trophies later, the 19-year-old Beatty was on stage again earlier this month, this time as one of 12 finalists in the Miss Teen USA Beauty Pageant, which was broadcast live from Biloxi, to 42 countries and an estimated audience of 25 million.

"What an experience. Even though they had all those cameras I wasn't too nervous because we went through so many rehearsals," Beatty said. "So when we were live there wasn't that much difference." The pageant concluded July 14 and featured 51 contestants representing the 50 states and the District of Columbia. For Beatty, it was a busy two weeks. "There were 60 many rehearsals and engagements scheduled for us," Beatty said.

"When I was there it seemed like we were too busy, but now that I'm back home, I miss it. I'd like to go back." Ramsey, who traveled to Biloxi for the final six days of the pageant, marveled at the production work and all the rehearsals. "I'd go see Jerilynn at the rehearsals and I was amazed and impressed with the production crews," Ramsey said. "I couldn't get over how they were able to plan every second." Beatty said that despite the long rehearsals, the contestants were able to enjoy plenty of southern hospitality. "Everyone was so nice to us," she said; "Everywhere we went, people talked with us.

They were genuinely interested in who we were." "It was great. Everywhere we went we had a full police escort, ki i ttii-fiiiM jii, i iiinffiiitmiiimi Letters Information misused I would like to remind all concerned that the last time (to my knowledge) the Arizona Criminal Justice Information System was misused, it resulted in the murder of a young mother residing in our city. Many staffers in various counties gave ACJIS information to a friend of theirs. These staffers did not sell or gain anything from the misuse. They gave the information to a young man who tracked his victim to her front porch.

Please note, Chief Donald Cu-ker, to many of us it matters little that no profit or gain was noted by you in the current case. What really matters is that two staffers used a highly confidential system for their own personal use. This in no way is any type of excuse that can be acceptable to the citizens of our city. Lucille Coopersmith Peoria The following telephone responses were offered by readers to the question posed by Community 'on whether or not they approve of the Glendale Union High School District spending part of the $4.3 million override money to increase employee benefits by $1,000: Critics all wrong I don't see any problem with it. I think the teachers should end up with it.

Employees should get the $1,000. They deserve it and I don't feel misled at all. We needed the override in a bad way and I think the critics are really wrong. Barbara Brower Phoenix Feels lied to No, I do not approve of them using this override money the way they have. As a taxpayer I feel I've been lied to.

Madeline Thorpe Glendale Teachers underpaid I agree with the $1,000 payment that you gave to the Glendale High School District employees. I think it is just great. I am not a teacher. I am a self-employed landscaper. I think it's a really great thing to do and if I was- a teacher, that is where I would want to teach, for someone who cares.

I think the teachers are underpaid. Larry Gabbard Phoenix Plumbers get more I am in favor of it. As the article said, the teachers have lost 17 percent since 1980. Perhaps the people who are- opposing the override might better spend their time and their money opposing the rising rates of electricians, plumbers, etc. They always have gotten paid more than teachers and they certainly get paid a lot more now.

I NelWard Phoenix $1,000 justified 'I think the $1,000 increase in salaries was justified. Why should teachers subsidize education? I think the people who voted for the override as I did would agree that teachers are underpaid. Those who voted against the override now have something they can use against the board. It should not be called a bonus. Robert J.

Mulligan Glendale Published Monday, Wednesday 1 Northwest Community Voters were misled I do not think the $1,000 bonus was an appropriate use of override money. Yes, I do think the voting public was misled. Yes, I do think this devious action will hurt future, pverride elections. Russell and Anna Bebb Glendale In a nutshell Disgusting. John J.

O'Neill Glendale Appropriate payment Yes, the $1,000 payment to employees was appropriate and responsible. It was appropriate that this community reward our teachers from whom we expect so much, and it was responsible because it was not put on the salary base, which would cause budgeting problems in the future. The teachers are our best educational resources for our youth. We, as a community, should support them the good job that they do for us. L.D.

Hortori Phoenix Should live in means I think it stinks; we the taxpayers have been taken for a ride again. We all have to live within our means, so why can't schools do likewise? Educators? Today it's just take the money and run, and continue to graduate students from high school and college that can neither read or write, and for that we give them a raise? We are stupid. R. Smallwood Glendale Voter changes tune I feel contempt and disgust. I will never vote for another override.

Previously, I had never voted against an override. Charles' W. Stevens Glendale Plans to remember The average pay for school teachers is $24,000 for nine months' work and minimum about 20 days vacation pay. Most industries and government are trying to cut costs. But you (GUHSD) deceive us, and to compound the override, you had the nerve to get them (teachers) a one-time $1,000 bonus.

We are under the Social Security system and retired, but it looks like the government may skip our cost-of-living increase for 1991 to help balance the budget. Wait until you ask for another override vote. We all remember. Nick Pazillo Glendale Voted against override Concerning the $1,000 payment and Friday Mark Henle Staff photographer' trophy she won in the Miss She was also excited to be able to meet the pageant's hosts, Sandi Duncan and Leeza Gibbons. "Sandy got all emotional at the end," Beatty said.

"She said she loved all of us." Despite her experience on stage, Beatty said, that meeting people for the first time 'is tough for her. "I'm confident when I'm on stage, but when it comes to meeting people, I'm basically a shy person," she said. Now that the contest is over, life is returning to normal for Beatty, who will begin her second year at Glendale Community College this fall. She hopes to transfer to Arizona State University to obtain a communications degree She also is modeling for the Robert Black Agency in Tempe. As for beauty contests, there's only one remaining that interests Beatty.

"After this experience, the only other contest I'd be interested in is Miss USA," Beatty said. "I'm not" sure whether I'll try for it or not. "I'll just have to see what the future brings." City West Northwest Valley BELL RD OF CHRIST Ambassador Fights BAPTIST CHURCH W.MondcllR Jerilynn Beatty shows off the Arizona Teen USA contest. "I'm confident when I'm on stage, but when it comes to meeting people, I'm basically a shy person." Jerilynn Beatty complete with sirens. We didn't have to stop for one red light the entire time we were there." To get to the national contest, Beatty had to compete with other Arizona teenagers in the Miss Arizona Teen USA contest.

Winning the statewide contest allowed the former Apollo cheerleader to represent Arizona at the national level. Her finish in the top 12 at the national pageant was the first time a representative from Arizona ever made it to the semifinals, she added.
