Phoenix Mayor Paul Johnson told the crowd gathered in the school's auditorium that opening books will "open minds and open doors," a theme of a city-sponsored reading program. "We know there's a relationship between reading and doing well in school and beyond Johnson said. The reading contracts have space for the child's name and a pledge from the parents that they will read with the child. There is room to list the books read.

Although simple, the contracts can have a strong influence, several teachers said. "It helps encourage parents because they've got a piece of paper and they can see their child's progress as they list the books," said Barbara Post, a fourth-grade teacher at Sunburst Elementary School in Phoenix. Shelly Kowitz, a fifth-grade pupil at Acacia Elementary School who attended Saturday's event with her mother and younger sister, said she enjoys reading mysteries, especially Nancy Drew books. "I think reading is fun," said Shelly, 10, who often reads stories to her sister, Julie, 7. "We try to get the whole family involved in reading," Cindy Kowitz, the girls' mother, said.

That's as it should be, Johnson said. Although duties as mayor keep him away from home much of the time, he makes time to read to his two sons, Justin, 9, and Paul, 13. "We read classic comic books," the mayor said, referring to the Classics Illustrated series.
