Afterwards his rivals had nothing but extravagant praise for the winner. "After the first 50 metres I didn't see him," Loader said. Kowalski added, "I thought he controlled the first 100 metres know that what I'm going to do is going to be good enough," he said. Afterwards he admitted he even surprised himself: "I was stunned," he said.

"I honestly didn't think I would go that fast" But he said he was fired up by the determination to recapture his Barcelona form. DAY medley gold medal winner Elli Overton. O'Neill's coach Bernie Wakefield revealed he had been introducing more distance training for O'Neill to counter the threat of the Chinese in the sprint events at the World Championships next month in Rome. But for Thomas, the gold medal was her first major championships success and the uninhibited joy she showed on the dais was as tingling as the swathe Perkins cut through the water. "This was a pretty special swim for me, Thomas said.

"I have been dreaming about this for a long time. Third placed Overton said she had expected O'Neill and Thomas to fight out the gold and silver, leaving her to make a clean sweep. Phil Rogers, who had taken out the 100m earlier this week tried gallantly to peg back Gillingham's lead in the last lap of the 200m, but Gillingham, the Barcelona bronze medallist was just too powerful. His time ot 2:12.54 was a Commonwealth Games record and was the fastest clocked this year. Later Brisbane breaststroker Samantha Riley also came tanta lisingly close to a world record in the 100m breaststroke but was denied the cherished mark by a mere 11 tenths of a second.

But Riley, who sliced nearly a second off her best, again left world record holder Rebecca Brown in her wake and barely consolable. Riley clocked 1:08.02 and Brown was second in 1:09.40. Riley has been the startling swimmer of the meet, coming within 77 hundredths of the 200m breaststroke world mark two nights ago. Her coach Scott Volkers had tipped a world record after the morning heat swim, but Riley's first 50m was slightly off the time needed to break the long-standing mark of 1:07.91 set by East German Silke Horner. He might make a fool of me, but it's just my gut feeling as a coach I think he is a bit short of the fitness he had at the Barcelona Olympics." But Perkins was determined to re-establish himself as the world Commonwealth i i iiilli; iiwAaaMntr JACQUELIN MAGNAY and ROY MASTERS With the green and gold Australian cheer squad screaming for a fast time and the stands packed with Aussie parents, the glamour boy of the pool, Kieren Perkins, set a new Commonwealth Games record in the final of the 400m on Monday night It then inspired a triumvirate of joy for Australia in women's 100m butterfly, where Mullumbimby swimmer Petria Thomas just touched out the Commonwealth record holder Susan O'Neill by a mere fingernail. Sydney medley expert Elli Overton was third. Englishman Nick Gillingham was the only one to spoil the golden party, beating Phil Rogers in the 200m breaststroke by a second. Perkins led all the way in a race which captivated the crowd because of the impending record and the battle between New Zealand's Danyon Loader and Australia's Daniel Kowalski for the silver. Perkins chopped more than four seconds off the time Australia's Ian Brown set in Auckland in 1990 and was only seven tenths of a second outside the world record time of 3:45.00 set by the Unified Team's Evgeni Sadovyi in Barcelona.

Loader took the silver by eight tenths of a second from Australia's Glen Housman who had to settle for fifth. Perkins swim scythed away the doubts about his 1994 form. Many believed that his commercial activities have dulled his sporting instincts. He may have even surprised his coach John Carew, who had some doubts last week about his fitness. Australian women Annette Woodward and Christine Trefry won the women's air pistol team gold by two points over New Zealand's Gerd Barkroan and Jocelyn Lees, while Michael Gius-tiniano and Bengt Sandstrom produced a solid effort to win their air pistol title with 1,137 points. Just a point separated England's bronze medallists Carol Page and Margaret Thomas from the Kiwis. Giustiniano and Sandstrom's combined total was two points ahead of Canadians John Rochon and Jean-Pierre Huot and four ahead of Indian teenagers Jaspal Rana and Vivek Singh, who won the bronze with 1,133.

A miscalculation first had New Zealand ahead of the Indians by a point and Rana left the shooting range before the correction. At the medal presentation, a team official stood in for Rana, who goes to the same college as Singh with whom he once shared rooms. We won by just luck," said Singh, 18. "I had not expected a medal because I have not been shooting at all well" Two 20-year-olds shrugged off bad weather to land Cyprus' first Commonwealth Games shooting gold medal. Shotgun duo Antonis Andreou and Christos Kourtellas, fresh from their national army service, won the skeet open, an outdoor event, in cold, overcast and windy conditions at Heal's Range.

"We may be a small nation but we have a lion's heart," said a proud Lakis Psimolophotis, president of the Cypriot-shooting federation. The Cypriot score of 189 out of a possible 200 points shooting clay pigeons was three points better than the next best by New Zealand and Scotland, England and Wales. The Kiwis, Brian Thomson and Geoffrey Jukes, edged the Scottish pair of Michael Thomson and Ian Marsden to the silver on the countback based on their last 10 shots. Although it was Cyprus's first games shooting gold, Psimolophotis was not surprised. The Cypriots had won the team event at the Milan world championships prior to coming here and had been confident of the title, he said.

Canadian men won a second men team title, with Wayne Sorensen teaming up with Michel Dion to win the three-positions rifle gold. In the prone, standing and kneeling positions, he shot the day's best score of 1,156 in Canada's total of 2,300. Scotland's William Murray and Allister Allan edged out Englishmen Chris Hector and Trevor Langridge for the silver medal. The two teams were first announced as level on 2,271 points, but a countback showed the English had fired one shot too many and they were penalised. Sorensen, whose father Arne is also on the shooting squad, earned his second gold medal of the Games, after he and Jean-Francois Senecal won a rifle event on Friday.

I feel blessed, Sorensen said. "I shot a great score. I didnt feel confident kneeling, but it looked like I just couldn't miss today."
