Johnston's family, including his wife, Denisc, and her parents, were anxious to sneak about the shooting "There's no way in hell he could have committed suicide," said Walter Hobie Sportswear Reiss, 56, Johnston's father-in-law.

Besides, the family said, his life had just taken a turn for the better. In place of dull and boring sportswear, Eagleson's brings you Johnston graduated from ITT work Monday night as usual. Sitting inside a 1977 Toyota station wagon that he had bought for $200, the 35-year-old Glendale man apparently sipped a can of Mountain Dew. He shut off the engine and the headlights. Shortly after, his life was ended, a bullet in the brain.

His 10-year-old daughter's headphones, music still playing, were wrapped around his head as he slumped over the steering wheel. "It's a violent death, and we're all still very shook," said Johnston's sister, Linda Jennings, on Wednesday. The anger and uncertainty over Peter Douglas "Doug" Johnston's death have anything but subsided, especially in light of suggestions by police that the man whom friends described as "the happiest man on Earth" may have taken his own life. More than 48 hours after the discovery of the body, police detectives and family members have more theories than clues. No motive has been esfablished.

His wallet, watch, ring and other valuables were left with his body. His family says he had no enemies. No telltale clues, such as a suicide note or indication of a struggle, were found. No witnesses were available. And no weapon was found.

"We're at this point investigating it as a possible homicide," said Sgt. Kevin Robinson, a Phoenix police spokesman. "Other than that, it is a continuing investigation, and we're Technical Institute with honors and, two weeks ago, landed a computer drafting job with ICM Inc. of Phoenix, his family said. Mesa stores open Thurs. Fri. til 9 P.M. By M.E. Saavedra The Arizona Republic A 14-ycar-old boy, who was sought by Phoenix police after apparently fleeing an accident in which a van he was driving fatally struck a 4-year-old boy, has surrendered to a police officer.

James Valcnzucla was apprehended at his grandmother's house in the 100 block of East St. Catherine Avenue on Tuesday about 7:10 p.m. by Officer John White. Valcnzucla was being detained Wednesday at Maricopa County's Durango Juvenile Court Center, according to Sgt. Kevin Robinson, a Phoenix police spokesman.

The boy allegedly was driving the van Monday evening in the 1300 block of South 13th Street when it struck Arthur Duarlc, who was standing near an ice-cream truck in front of his house. Valcnzucla is a friend of Duartc's family. After the child was struck, the driver made a U-turn, drove past the victim and sped away. The ice-cream truck's driver followed the van but lost it. It later was found in front of Valenzucla's house in the 1000 block of East Apache Street, but Valcnzucla was not found.

Police officials credited White, 30, with apprehending the boy, saying the officer had built a rapport with Valenzucla's mother, Rene Valcnzucla, while police were searching for the boy. White has worked for the Police Department for more than four years and has patrolled the south Phoenix neighborhood where Valenzucla's family lives for about a year. "My main concern was that James was frightened and running," White said Tuesday. "I tried to calm her (Rene) down and let her know that it was just an accident." He encouraged her to contact police if her son called her, and she phoned White about 6:15 p.m. to tell him that James wanted to surrender to White.

White said that when he went to the grandmother's house, the boy was waiting for him and that he took him into custody without incident. The victim's family could not be reached for comment.
