Griffey singled with two out off Jesse Orosco (2-2). Martinez then hit his fifth home run. The Mariners had IS hits, including two doubles, two triples and the four home runs.

"It was a slider that stayed in the middle of the plate and I hit it pretty good," Martinez said of the 2-2 pitch from Orosco. Mike Schooler (1-0) earned the -win, yielding Sandy Alomar's third home run, in the 10th. Griffey, 20, has hit two home runs a game three times. Martinez's two-homer game was his first. Now comes the fun part. The second-ranked Sun Devils got four hits from Mike Kelly and strong pitching from Todd Douma and Rusty Silcox to beat the University of New Orleans, 9-2, at Packard Stadium. Kelly's perfect day at the plate raised his batting average from .375 to .386 and moved him ahead of Anthony Manahan (.383) for the team lead. He doubled off the top of the center field fence in the first inning, singled sharply three times and was walked intentionally. He scored four times and drove in one run. Kelly, who apparently likes to deal in round numbers, has scored 80 runs and driven in 80 to go with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases. He is the fifth player in ASU history to have at least 80 runs and 80 RBIs in the same season.

Tacoma (25-15) entered Sunday night's game against the Firebirds (19-19) with 12 straight victories at Phoenix Municipal Stadium dating back to 1988. Make it 13 and counting after the Tigers' 16-7 victory before a crowd of 2,234.

"I don't know what it is," said Tacoma Manager Brad Fischer, in reference to the Tigers' success in Phoenix. "Part of it is I think our players are really comfortable because we have spring training here. Wc play good basebal here." Center fielder Eric Fox led Tacoma's 22-hit attack with four hits, including a three-run homer in the fifth, and five RBI. "We're just happy to get back here to the warm weather," Fox said. "It was windy and cold out there and a lot people wanted to get out of the cold weather." The Firebirds, who had won seven of their past eight games on.
