SATURDAY, MAV 31, 1986 O I Ht ARIZONA KtPUBLIC G3 Care w has contract agreement Republic Sports Wire ANAHEIM HILLS, Calif. - Rod Carew, unable to land a job in the major leagues after reaching 3,000 hits last season, has called a Monday news conference to announce that he has agreed to a one-year contract with a major league club. Carew, who has been coaching his daughter's softball team while waiting for an offer, Friday night would not reveal the club with which he has come to terms. The news conference will be at his Anaheim Hills home. "Rod has received an offer from a major league team," a spokesman for Carew, who declined to be identified, told the Associated Press earlier Friday. "Money has not been discussed, but the ballclub that contacted him said the objective was to have Carew as a member of the team and working out contract details would just be a formality." Carew, 40, led the American League in hitting seven times, including four1 straight years from 1972-75. He chased the .400 mark before settling for a .388 average in 1977. His lifetime average is .328. After playing 12 years for the Minnesota Twins, Carew played for the California Angels during the last seven seasons. Carew has 3,053 hits in 19 big-league seasons, the 13th-highest total in major league history. He batted .280 with two homers and 39 RBI with the Angels last year but was not offered a contract for 1986. Carew had said May 12 that he had given up hope of playing again. A few days later, he said he would not play if he hadn't been offered a contract by June 15. Pacific Coast League Firebirds, Toros rained out again Republic Sports Wires i TUCSON - Thunderstorms struck Hi Corbett Field on Friday, washing out a scheduled double-header between the Firebirds and Tucson Toros. It was the second straight day rains have hit the series. This time, they started before the fifth inning with the score tied at 1-1. After a 54-minute delay, the game was called. The two teams will start from scratch today. Double-headers are scheduled today and Sunday, both starting at 6 p.m. The Firebirds had already been involved in seven rainouts this season. While about 100 fans huddled beneath an awning, the Firebirds kept them entertained. First, pitcher Mark Grant, who is known for such antics, emerged from the Phoenix dugout to do a dance and make a baseball "disappear." Later, pitcher Mike Jeffcoat strolled shirtless to the mound in a downpour and went through a series of body-building poses while the crowd cheered. Then, Grant came out again, this time to do an impersonation of Reggie Jackson. The remaining crowd picked up on it, chanting "Reg gie" as Grant hit a make-believe home run to right, watched its flight, then circled the bases.
