ground The A-22 can be ordered with a parachute that lowers the entire craft to the ground not just the pilot if it's severely hit or disabled by enemy fire Despite its small size the plane is designed to tangle with enemy helicopters and to knock out light tanks with a 30 mm McDonnell Douglas cannon The A-22 also is designed to carry out "surgical" strikes picking off enemy troops without blowing up a whole village Sadler said Air Force Maj Eric Petlerson said "light armed surveillance aircraft" like the Sadler A-22 can play an important role in Third World conflicts "Aircraft like the Sadler in adequate numbers could really provide a great deal of security to the countryside and combat power for the government forces" Petterson said Petterson is international politico-military-affairs officer with the Army-Air Force Center for Low-Intensity Conflict at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia With about 45 wars or insurgencies going on around the world there is no shortage of potential uses for low-tech fighter aircraft Petterson said Sadler also is pitching the A-22 to America's special-operations forces as a few-cost way to provide dose alf support as well original A-22 design The drone was successfully demonstrated to the US Missile Command at the Yuma Proving Grounds late last year The A-22 traces its roots to an ultralight aircraft that Sadler produced in Scottsdale in 1983-84 Dubbed the Sadler Vampire the all-metal craft won the Grand Champion Award at the Experimental Aircraft Association's Ultralight convention in 1982 Thirty Vampires were produced at Scottsdale Airport before Sadler shut down the operation because of concerns about product liability Since 198S the Vampire has been built under license to Sadler in Sydney Australia But it is the A-22 that has been the center of Sadler's life for much of this decade "It's a big project one you don't do overnight" he said High School is great" Daniels said "She reinforces what I talk to the class about but really 'gives me the freedom to make the impact I want" Junior Achievement a national organization created in 1919 to teach young people about the business world has become one of the most widely accepted business curriculums in the Valley touching 11- to 18-year-olds It has been operating in the Valley for -27 years In junior high the curriculum is a 4-week or 12-week discussion program In high schools it is a semester long and includes simulated business and market competition and actual product manufacturing High-school students are graded for their performance in the classes Teachers must request Junior Achievement involvement in their business classes and consultants teach one class a week from Junior Achievement instructional materials In the Phoenix area the program reaches one in six sixth-graders one in four eighth-graders and one in six high-school seniors Real impact is on thinking The real value of the Junior Achievement program is its impact on thinking those involved in the program say The benefit js even more visible now that the program is a classroom activity they add For example a Junior Achievement class underwent preprogram testing with dismal results Stubbs said When asked what kind of economic system the United States had 42 percent said socialism 19 percent said communism and the balance said capitalism or didnt answer he said By the end of the program however 72 percent correctly identified capitalism Junior Achievement is one of the more-popular community-service organizations for Valley executives "We seem to draw people who've always wanted to teach who have learned lessons in their career they want to share and people who want to provide a role model to inspire these kids to stay in school and achieve" Stubbs said The program's business volunteers also can use the classroom setting to hone presentation skills understand their firms better give something back to their communities and squeeze a Junior Achievement the program it draws business people into Junior-high and high-school classrooms is growing in popularity at Phoenix-area schools This year Junior Achicvemcntwill reach twice as many pupils as it did five years ago mainly because of a change in its approach: to an in-scliool curriculum from an after-school program The change was made nationwide last year and was a reaction to a need to reach more pupils said John Stubbs marketing director for Junior Achievement of Central Arizona Inc The in-school program increases the number of students consultants reach Stubbs said "In the (after-school) program you had four or five consultants for a group of about 20 to 25 students" he said Now each consultant presents his program to a class of 25 or so pupils The after-school program hit its peak in 1975 when it reached about 575000 pupils nationally This year with the in-school curriculum the figure is 1072000 Vallcy-widc participation in the in-school program last year reached 16400 pupils Five years ago 8764 pupils participated This year more than 17300 sixth- eighth- and 12-gradcrs at 109 Valley schools will be instructed by 525 consultants from more than 400 Phoenix-area companies The in-school program isn't a big hit only with pupils Business consultants like it too "A lot of times with the night program it would deteriorate into a bunch of kids silting around talking" said Marilyn Gagcn partner in charge of tax services at Dcloitlc Haskins and Sells and a Junior Achievement consultant and board member "Now that rarely happens" she said "Executives who go into those classrooms to teach can really get through to the kids if they make the Structured classes a boon The structured classroom environment is an advantage said Lori Daniels a State Farm agent and Junior Achievement consultant "The teacher I work with at Mesa their shells a little" Interest was so high Gagen said that she spent two sessions letting-pupils ask basic questions about her work "Some of them even performed extra-credit work and gave me beautiful presentations that were very logical and showed the increase in their level of comprehension" she said Pupils see the opportunity to talk to a professional as an advantage Stubbs said "The kids usually don't get to see anything of business except what they see on television or read about in the papers" he said "It isn't that anyone has deliberately misinformed them They just don't have any frame of reference" For many Junior Achievement alumni the good feeling about the program lives on Phoenix businessman Jack Armcr is a former Junior Achiever who now is a program volunteer "What I learned in Junior Achievement I still use in business" Armer said "It was a wonderful experience" Twyla Pumroy Is a freelance writer class and I've been told this is true across the entire program demonstrated a high degree of interest I think they went away with an even higher level of understanding" Junior Achievement classes help draw out the pupils which ultimately will help them become successful in business careers Gagcn said "I was amazed at how introverted some of them were" she said "We did mock job interviews and
