And Nike agreed. "We are a major advertiser, and we don't want to be in an adversarial relationship with a major network," said Tom Clarke, Nike vice presided trying to acquire the rights to a National League East team, possibly the New York Mcts. By Bob Cohn The Arizona Republic Joe Garagiola will be back in the booth this summer. Garagiola, who ended a long relationship with NBC after the 1988 baseball season, will team with Joe Torre on 35 California Angels telecasts on the SportsChannel Los Angeles cable network. Cable America of Mesa is the only local cable system carrying all of SportsChannel's programming. Insight Cablevision, which serves several small communities in the west Valley, is expected to try SportsChannel on a trial basis, and then see if viewers want to keep it. There are no current plans for Dimension Cable to pick up the full SportsChannel schedule.

"The situation was exactly what 1 was looking for," said Garagiola, a longtime Valley resident. "I was flattered other clubs were calling me. "But with the logistics, I didn't want to do a full schedule, and the Angels' situation is right on target." Garagiola called no games during the 1989 season after he told NBC the previous August not to renew his contract. His decision to leave NBC, for whom he had worked in various capacities (baseball analyst, Today, game shows) since 1957, caused an uproar at the time. He decided to sever his relationship when he learned his on-air performance would be re-evaluated by network bigwigs.

Garagiola said he was incredulous he would be "auditioned after 27 years." His last NBC broadcast was the '88 World Series, working with Vin Scully. Garagiola received favorable reviews. In addition to his Angels job, Garagiola will play host of the syndicated radio program, Baseball Sunday, carried locally by KTAR (620 AM). He also will do a syndicated, 90-second radio commentary five days a week, which he hopes KTAR will pick up. Garagiola's only real association with baseball last year was as an on-field announcer for several Equitable Old-Timers games, which raises money for disadvantaged former players.

New look After two weeks off the air, Sports Byline returns at 11 p.m. Sunday on KNXV-TV (Channel 15) with some notable changes. Jude LaCava replaces Dave Tunell as host of the program, a half-hour talk show featuring writers from The Arizona Republic and Phoenix Gazette. LaCava, host of 620 Sportsline on KTAR radio, said one of his main duties will be to add "energy" to the show. "I consider myself one of the panelists, one of the commentators," he said.

"And 1 have the responsibility to keep the show moving." Different guests will appear each week, depending on what's going on in the world of fun and games. New sound KAMJ-AM, otherwise known as SportsRadio 1230, has a new name and a new format as of last Monday. Now, it's MIX 1230 AM. Program Director Rich Erickson will play host to a news, talk and sports show from 6-8 a.m., Monday through Friday. The daytime programming then will consist of syndicated, non-sports talk shows.

Sports resumes at 5 p.m. with Dave liddy's talk show. Live sports will be featured from 7 p.m. through midnight. Tuncll's talk show has been eliminated.
