The low-fiber diet replaced the oat bran with Cream of Wheat and other sources of refined wheat. The foods contained 800 to 1,000 calories a day. The volunteers could eat whatever else they wanted but had to keep track of what they ate and how much. Source: Scripps Howard By Peter Aleshire The Arizona Republic Elderly women who drink coffee are more sexually active, and elderly men who drink coffee are less likely to be impotent, according to a survey published in the January issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine. Among married women, 62 percent of coffee drinkers said they were sexually active but just 40 percent of nori-coffee-drinkcrs said they were.

Among married men, 36 percent of coffee drinkers said they sometimes had sexual trouble, compared with 59 percent of those who didn't drink coffee. Haney The Associated Press BOSTON Contrary to cereal advertisements and popular belief, oat bran has no inherent cholesterol-lowering effect, according to a study that challenges one of the biggest food crazes of the 1980s. Critics were skeptical of the findings.

The new research concludes that people who eat lots of oat bran do, indeed, have less cholesterol in their blood, not because of any special powers of oat bran but because they eat less saturated fat and cholesterol. "There really isn't any cholesterol-lowering property in oat bran," said Dr. Frank M. Sacks, a co-author of the study by researchers from the Harvard University Medical School. "Oat bran pretty much docs the same as other cereal products." Oat bran has been promoted as a health food largely because it is rich in soluble fiber.

By Jim Walsh and Eric Miller The Arizona Republic A paid informer for the federal Drug Enforcement Administration gency has told Phoenix police detectives that a former undercover officer owed money to cocaine dealers and was "in their pocket," according to a police report. Assistant Police Chief Jerry Oliver confirmed Wednesday that the department is investigating reports that former Officer Cleo Lewis received payoffs from drug dealers, but he said the allegations have yet to be verified.
