ELK ORATOB DROPS DEAD. While Dcllrerinfr Memorial AddreMN Sondar. Springfield, Dec. Van Hosen, register of the United States land office here, and for many years a Republican leader in this section, dropped dead In the pulpit of.tbc First Cumberland Presbyterian church this afternoon while delivering an address at the annual memorial services of Florence of Elka. He was closing ills address with a plea for acts of kindness for the living rather than for the dead he sank to the floor, expiring immediately.

He had been active In polltica practically life and made ar number of speeches during tbe recent cftmpaign fdr the Republican state committee.

He bad been in rather poor liealth for several months. J. F. Sanson went to Lawrence and Topeka this afternoon on Herman lUdke Raised a Family and Boairht a Fine Farm. Herman Radke, hearty and genial and optimistic was a visitor nt the court house this morning, having come up from Humboldt to pay his taxes and attend to other business.

Much has been said of the difficulty Of getting along in this world, but Mr. Radke has done right well under conditions many men would consider cause for quitting. Twenty-six years ago he began work on the Santa Fc section at Humboldt and with the exception of one year he has been steadily on the job ever since. Ho has raised a family of six children well, two of bis boys having good jobs with the road in the bridge gangs out east of Humboldt he has a fine 160-acre farm to which ha looks forward to occupying when he gets the old Santa Fo to running so smoothly he can safely leave it. OIL FIELD BOOMIXO AGAIX.

filX UQRSES A LAUXDRY. Tbe Bank Resnlur VLsit. Lnwsnit XoTcmlier Saw Wells in This Field. The MIdcontlncnt Oil Field was never more active than It Is at present, thanks to recent rises In the price qf crude oil and tbe diminution of the sup ply. November showed 816 wells drilled and 7.51 drills running, which is a new record.

Six hundred three of the wells were Oilers, 83 gassers and 130 were drj- holes. Alien county is credited with six wells, ail oil producers, and three rigs are now drilling new wells. The six wells are credited a tlon of 75 barrels. The total new oil produetlon for the inontb Is about 23.000 barrels dally. The I morning papers nQte another hike of 5 cents a barrel in Pennsylvania and Ohio oils, which will probably be reflected here.

Attendants at district court are grow ing superstitious about the ceration of the Model I.aundr>-. It in- tnided its skeleton into court this morning for the third time, with appendices, suckers and attachments accumulated with the years. Its present relncarceraUon is In tbe form of a suit by the State Savings Bank to collect, a $400 chattel mortgage given by E. O. Bruner In" February, 1911, the security being six horses.

The bank cites tbe note and asks judgment. Bruner confesses the note, but amends and explains. He says he took the laundry under a $1,100 mortgage held by the He later gave the 1400 to secure a sixty day extension of the time on the larger maebtedness. and he pleads a verljal agrcenlent aside from the note. He says bank could have sold the laundry the sum of the original mortgage, but refused, that he received no money for his $400 note an dthat It is the bank's own fault that It is not in the clear and he freed of any obligation.

He refused to give lip the six horses. The last time the case was up he was suing the bank on the same premises. When yoti get six horses in a laundry stands to reason that there is going to be trouble in clearing up things.
