Second, very rarely would a studio "open" a major film in the home video market if the producers thought they had a quality product. Home video relies on the advertising campaigns of a film's theater run to generate interest. If you go directly to home video, however, you rely largely on word of mouth. And that can be a slow, unprofitable way to promote a film.

My Spoilsport-of-the-Month Award goes to CBS-Fox Home Video for its Mystery Magician The one-hour cassette stars an unidentified masked magician who, amid a lot of hype and folderol, reveals the secrets behind certain tricks. Contrary to adver-. tisements, you won't learn how to make people float. But you will learn how to saw someone in half, suspend someone on a sword and a few other nifty things. You learn the secrets behind only about a half-dozen tricks.

More importantly, I found something cheesy about watching a tape designed to debunk one of life's nice little white lies: magic. By STEPHEN ADVOKAT Knlght-Rldder You might think the home video market would be the last place in which a famous rock star like Mick would launch a major motion picture. But you'd be wrong. the first place. Jagger stars in Running Out of a new movie that CBS-Fox Home Video released this month.

What sets this apart from other films is that Running was made 'expressly for the home video market and will not have a theater run. That makes me nervous about how good it can be. Jagger produced and co-wrote Running Out of Luck in which he plays a spoiled, flirtatious "'superstar (sound familiar?) who is Smugged and abandoned in the I -wilderness. Using a series of adven-vtures that take him through society's underworld, Jagger finally returns to his own life, a new man. The film is directed by Julien Temple (Jazzing for Blue Jean, Absolute Beginners) and co-stars Dennis Hopper Easy Rider, Texas Chainsaw Massacre IT) and Rae Dawn Chong Commando, Choose Me).

What makes me wary about the 11 i Lexington Series at Liberty Square Mick Jagger cinematic quality of Running Out of Luck is this: Although Jagger told a retail video magazine that the film is meant to stand alone, some of it looks like music video clips that have been tied together.
