Muscare, 54, is in San Diego County Jail awaiting a hearing on extradition to Orlando, where a warrant was issued Aug.

Randy Means, public relations director of the sheriffs department, said Wednesday that sexual battery involving an adult and someone between the ages of 12 and 18 is considered a felony and carries a life sentence in Florida. Muscare, who resigned as the Channel 15 horror-movie host in early September citing personal reasons, was arrested Monday at a trailer park, according to Rick Carlson, public-information officer for the San Diego Police Department.

Bail has been set at $25,000. Carlson as "oral, anal or vaginal penetration by, or union of, the sexual organ of another, or the anal or vaginal penetration of another by any other object." Muscare's arrest surprised staffers at Channel 15. "I really had very little information at the time Ed resigned, other than (that he did so) for personal reasons," said Stu Powell, general manager of Channel 15. "Ed did not talk to me about it at all, but I had some inkling." Powell reported that shortly after Muscare resigned he received a call from Detective James Lutrell, who was investigating the case for the sheriffs department in Florida. Orange County Sheriffs spokesman Means said Muscare phoned Lutrell about two weeks ago to inquire if he was wanted by authorities.

Told that he was, Means said Muscare said he would call back but never did. "We do not know if he's fighting (extradition) or not. If he does not fight it, we can get him back in a week or so," Means said, adding that if Muscare chooses to fight extradition it could take several months before he is moved to Florida. Fans who have been conducting a petition drive seeking Muscare's return to the air have not given up. "Hopefully, it isn't the nail in the coffin," said Scott E.

The network broadcasts occurred at a time when Newton applied with Eddie Torres to purchase the Aladdin hotel-casino on the Strip in Las Vegas, Nev.

U.S. District Judge Myron Crocker in Las Vegas said Newton's appearance before a Connecticut grand jury investigating organized crime could have a definite bearing on the entertainer suit against NBC. The Connecticut investigation was not related to the Aladdin Hotel purchase. JACK LEMMON said Wednesday he will keep on acting until he is "run over by a truck or a critic." Lemmon is in Israel for a two-week run of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night, which opens in Tel Aviv tonight after a stint in London. London critics gave the actor mixed reviews.

With his Traffic mates, drummer Jim Capaldi and sax player Chris Wood, Winwood drew from a jazzblues tradition of spontaneous response. Now that equal colleagues have been replaced by back- ing musicians, there is no one with the I authority to push Winwood into the kind of off-the-cuff expression that was Traffic's forte. As one of England's more challenging instrumental outfits, Level 42 was a compatible opener for a man who has done his share of challenging pop -conventions. Level 42 has much in common with Winwood's current style, using a similar blend of multilayered instrumentation and prominent beat.

By ANDREW MEANS The Arizona Republic Steve Winwood belongs to that growing body of rock performers who have spanned two generations of listeners, in the process presenting each generation with a different impression. Predictably enough, the generation that filled Mesa Amphitheatre on Wednesday was the one that knows this English virtuoso primarily for his '80s visage. The show was tailored for this, with material drawn mainly from the three solo albums that have revived 38-year-old Winwood's career Arc Of A Diver, Talking Back To The Night, and the current Back In The High Life. Only the occasional number I'm A Man and the opener, The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys, harked back to his precocious start as a teen-ager with the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic, dating back to the '60s. Wearing a loose-fitting shirt and a carefree smile, he alternated between playing keyboards and electric guitar and dancing and singing, microphone in hand, while his eight-piece band provided accompaniments. Although his vocals sometimes sounded a little muffled, that is his timbre in any case.
