The first library, which was established in 1924, at Devonshire Street, Surry Hills, and has been closed for 18 months, has been re opened. More than 7,000 children are cur rently enrolled at all the libraries, which have nearly 20.000 books. The total enrolment of children over the years has been more than 25.000.

The Education Department has given the use of the old school at Mitlasong to the movement for a library, which will, be opened shortly. The Achfleld Municipal Council has given a lead to other suburban councils by deciding to establish a library and craft centre in conjunction with I he Children Library Movement. For Hits purpose the council has made available an old mansion home in Norton Street, Ashfleld, where activities will be started shortly. The local auxiliary will be formed to-day. COUNCILS' INTEREST.

Other municipal councils, including Erskineville, Kuring-gai, Hornsby, and Chatswood, are already co-operating with the movement, and are contributing to the maintenance of libraries In their particular municipalities. The Sydnev City Council established a precedent, for local government suooort for the children's libra ries, when, in 1937, premises were made available rent free in the old municipal plant nursery. Pottins shsds were converted Into a library and craft centre, and fittings and equipment wore also supplied by the City Council. Later, the council erected stages and flood-lighting for the open-air theatre, and has continued to give an annual grant towards the maintenance of the The Citv Council is now converting another adtacent building into a craft room and Indoor theatre, complete with stages, dressing-rooms, and shnrfrR. Most of the premies In which the libraries are at, present housed are inoripnnnte for the rapidly expanding needs of the centres.

The Chatswooo library, which had 21,860 book issues last year, is situated in two small rooms. The Katoomba library, with M.000 book issues, is housed In six enraces. Several centres have supporting local auxiliaries. The Children's Library Movement, which last year received a State grant of 500. has had its grant doubled this year.

The Sydney City Council's grant is 326. Donations, receipts of functions and entertainment, and other smaller collections brought last year's income up to 1,644710. There are only 14 paid workers in the movement, which has 50 voluntary neipers. FREE FOR ALL AGES. The organising secretary of the Children's Library Movement.

Mrs. Mary Matheson. who was one of the founders, emphasises that the libraries are tree for children of all ages. The original idea of libraries has been extended to include craft work for children and adults, particularly leisure-time activity in the evening for boys and girls over school age. Musicians, artists, and actors have assisted in arranging cultural programmes, which include ballets, folksong and folk-dance festivals, nroduc- tions of Shakespearean and Nativity plays, in addition to plays for and by cnuaren.

me aevciopment of such an organisation as the Children's Library Movement cannot be left entirely to oinciai auinoriues, Mrs. Matneson said yesterday. "There is a freedom In the libraries which attracts chil dren. The lack of enforced discipline rings Eeii-aiscipune tne cnuaren. uoraries and craft centres automatic ally cut at the root of all child delln quency." Mrs.

Matheson emDhasised that there was no need to wait for the post-war period for the establishment of more centres.
