"However, at this time, I felt Bobby Hebert and Dave Wilson fit better into our plans than Richard did." Herman Edwards, a fixture at cornerback for the Philadelphia Eagles for a decade, also was a casualty. Edwards had played in 135 straight games and needed just two more interceptions to set a team record.

"He had all the things that you look for in a football player. He was a positive leader, had a good attitude and experience," said coach Buddy Ryan. "But he got old, and he can't do it anymore." Edwards was joined on the unemployment list by offensive tackle Doug Williams, the New York Jets' second-round pick. Charles Alexander, a starter at running back for most of his seven years, was cut by Cincinnati. Also released were Tommy Vigorito, Miami's oft-injured punt-return specialist, and veteran wide receiver Brian Baschnagel of the Chicago Bears.

NFL New England running back Robert Weathers should be sidelined for about two months because of a fractured left leg suffered in a car accident during the weekend, said Patriots coach Raymond Berry. Weathers, 25, a former Arizona State player who also suffered a broken nose, was alone in his car when the accident occurred at Easton, Mass The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that veteran Steve DeBerg will be their starting quarterback over Steve Young. DeBerg completed 10 of 26 passes for 173 yards Saturday against the Washington Redskins. COLLEGE BASKETBALL -Former NBA Chicago Bulls coach Stan Albeck, a 1955 graduate of Bradley University, hinted that he could be the school's next head coach. Bradley has scheduled a news conference for this morning to introduce its new coach.

"We're still talking. But, yeah, we're down to dotting the 'i's' and crossing the 't's'" on a multiyear contract, said Albeck by telephone from his San Antonio, Texas, home. "There's no finality to it." Notre Dame basketball guard David Rivers, injured in a weekend automobile accident, might not recover in time to play in the 1986-87 season, said a surgeon at South Bend, Ind. Dr. Kirby Gross, the surgeon, predicted a complete recovery from a severe abdominal cut but said that Rivers' return for the coming season was questionable.

Marco Baldi, a 6-foot-ll center for St. John's, will not play this season and probably will return to his native Italy because of expanded NCAA sanctions against him, according to the New York Times. The Times, quoting an unidentified source in the school's administration, reported in today's editions that the NCAA has told the university that the sophomore would be banned this season and for four games in 1987-88. Baldi had been suspended for 16 games last season because because he accepted expense money from an Italian club team to try out for the national team. NO CHARGES FILED The girlfriend of former football great Jim Brown told police she does not want to press charges against Brown, who allegedly assaulted the woman at his Hollywood Hills, home on Friday.

"I asked her (Debra Clark, 21) why, and she gave me the reasons, but I can't divulge them," said Los Angeles police detective Jack Luther. "I asked her if she was sure and she said BHUSKER OUT FOR SEASON? University of Nebraska I-back back Doug DuBose, scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee today, could miss the entire football season, said trainer George Sullivan. "We'd have to plan on 21 to 28 days at the minimum, but if he has ligament damage, that would probably finish him for the year," Sullivan said.
