sale, and both are figuring in its new life as an export-oriented concern. Mr Hackett recently went to Hong Kong to look at wine-selling operations there, and he came away appalled by the attitude of other Australian exporters. "Too many of them seem te be using the place as a dumping ground," he said. "You look along the supermarket shelves and see a few old flagons with the worst-: looking labels you have seen and you are left in no doubt as to why Australia isn't selling much wine there. The first vintage under the new owners is now under way, and at least two-thirds of it will be shipped to Hong Kong.

All of the grapes this year were bought from previous co-op members, and they will remain important to the operation although Mr Lau says he is looking at a couple of vineyards in the area to buy. The distillery will soon go back to work to make brandy, and although Mr Lau realises that the French Cognac hold on the Far East will be hard to crack, he believes economic circumstances will allow cheaper products on to what is an extremely lucrative market But can Mr Lau succeed in selling wine in Asia when other Australian companies have failed? "Wine is a commodity like everything else," he said firmly. "To sell in Asia you have to know the people you are dealing with. "I am Chinese and I live in Hong Kong. They are my friends behind those doors." BOTTLE war; George's house and offices were looted, and he lost everything.

After the war he met a Frenchman who manufactured wigs. "I didn't even know what a wig.was," said Mr Lau, "but I sensed a challenge. This man said we could never make wigs in Hong Kong like he did in Paris but within a very short time we were making as many wigs in a day as he did in two weeks, and we put him out of business. That's the kind of challenge I like." Wine is another. Among investments in Australia George Lau bought a farm in the McLaren Vale district which is now run by his son, Roland.

On a visit last year he noticed that the Southern Vales Co-op winery was for sale, made a few inquiries, and then pounced. "I suppose I was looking for more investments," said Mr Lau. "I saw the winery just two days before I was due to leave. Before I knew it, it was mine." Although the business has had a chequered career, there is no reason why the Laus should not make what is now simply called Southern Vales Winery" work. The property, in the main street of McLaren Vale, began life more than 80 years ago as the first co-operative winery in the district.

It was taken over in 1911 by Pen-folds who used it as an important local production centre, augmenting their other wineries in Magill and the Barossa Valley. Wine maker Simon Hackett and the distillery were included in the CIENT DISTRICT STYLE Laurent Perrier Brut Champagne Celebrate this Easter with a bottle of tine French (tlC QQ IL Brut champagne. $1.3.77 bot. $185 doz. tually he had his own haberdashery business in the city, and then young George Fong came along.

"I don't know where I was born." he confessed with a chuckle. "I didn't have a birth certificate and when you are two or three years old you don't think of asking anybody details like that. I can remember going to Curry Street Primary School in Adelaide, but it wasn't until I went back to China that I discovered my name was Lau." That was in the mid-1 930s, and George had plenty of trouble with the bureaucrats. He could not get an Australian passport because he did not have a birth certificate, and he could not get citizenship in Hong Kong for much the same reason. He knew he had relatives in Hong Kong, however, and although they turned out to be Laus and not Fongs he at least had roots.

He worked hard, in typical Chinese fashion, and soon established himself in business. The Japanese occupied Hong Kong during the PASQUA 1981 PINOT GRIGIO A HIGH CLASS WHITE OF GOLDEN STRAW O.O.C. 947 doz. I WHEN a Hong Kong millionaire comesDto town and buys a winery which he says will be devoted almost entirely to producing wine for export to Asia it is not surprising that the locals should wonder if they are hearing things correctly But that is what has happened in McLaren Vale. South where in a rather extraordinary chain of events the bankrupt Southern Vales Co-operative has been taken over by a Chinese industrialist whose other interests include a wig-making factory in Hong Kong and an artificial flower plant in South Korea. Already one major shipment of co-op stocks has been made to South-East Asia, and its new owner says that as far as exports of wine in future are concerned, "the sky is the Behind these remarkable happenings is Mr George M. Lau, whose own story could provide the plot for a James A.

Michener mega-novel. "Was I born in Adelaide?" he asked with a smile when I talked to him at McLaren Vale a few days ago. "It sounds crazy, but I just don't know!" George Lau is aged around 70. He is tall for a Chinese, softly spoken, articulate, and very, very rich. He runs what is basically an import-export business from offices in Tsimhautsui East, in Kow-loon, and to him his venture into wine is the kind of thing that has driven all of his business career a challenge.

"People tell me there is something I can't do and I want to prove them wrong. In this case I want to sell wine in Asia. Tastes in Hong Kong are for hard liquor so it is going to be difficult to get people on to wine. "It's going to be a long process and we are going to have to do it the hard way, but if we get just a 10 per cent increase in wine drinking we will be talking about a lot of wine." Mr Lau, who Is an uncle of the Lau family restaurateurs in Melbourne, did not even know his real surname until he was about 16. His father called himself Fong, and came to Australia from China a century ago to work as a coolie in the Victorian goldfields.

When the gold ran out he walked to Adelaide, where he set up business as a tailor and tinker, going from door to door with a horse and cart selling buttons and bows and all manner of odds and ends.
