2 THE AGE, Monday 12 March 1M4 NEWS DIARY TV REVIEW The people of Griffith prayed for justice last night on the eve of the inquest on Donald Mackay.Page 3 Something starting with Victoria's irrigation system's cost has been borne mainly by taxpayers because water has been sold to farmers at less than cost, according to a study. Page 4 Zimbabwean villagers and churchmen say that Government soldiers have killed more than two dozen people and cut off food supplies to half a million drought-stricken people in southern Zimbabwe, in a new drive against dissidents. People who have fled the area report executions, torture, arrests and starvation. Page 7 A probation officer in the western suburbs believes the consorting law, as it stands, victimises young people. On Saturday Mr Hart scored his fourth straight win against the former vice-Presi-dent Walter Mondale. "Super Tuesday" is now just one day away. Page 8 modation for those who are picketing the site.

Unfortunately because of the pressure of time, the workers did not have time to utilise the electricity and plumbing to the buildings before they were shifted. They now have hired a generator to provide the power for the urns and ovens and lights also supplied (involuntarily) by the authority. Capital costs CANBERRA is in the grip of a dire housing shortage which has led to an astronomical spiraling of housing prices and rents in recent months. Last week the National Capital Development Commission, which supplies most of Canberra's land for home building, watched as buyers at a Government auction bid up the price of a building block in the outer Canberra suburb of Mackellar to $60,500. Its reserve price had been $28,600.

Tbe Government has now suspended auctions while it reviews its land sales policy. Similar amazing events are occurring in the rental' market where one colleague reports that the owner of a house invited all potential tenants to assemble at the property where he than conducted an auction, letting the house to the tenant who bid the highest rent The ACT Trades and Labor Council, which monitors prices as part of the wages accord reported this week that house rents rose 31 per cent in the past three months, with the average advertised house rent in Canberra now $170 a week. TEN days ago "The Age' reported that Clarie Hermes Canberra's former Chief Magistrate who has been commissioned by the Government to advise on disciplinary charges against those involved in the ASIS' shambles at the Sheraton Hotel, is. himself a former ASIS; agent This interesting background information was apparently overlooked by the Prime Minister Bob Hawke when he announced the appointment When Foreign Minister Bill Hayden, who is responsible for ASIS, was asked he acknowledged that Mr Hermes was indeed "former and in his reply somewhat crypticly volunteered that he had resigned voluntarily from the spy organisation. His reference to voluntary resignation was widely seen to be a way of contrasting Mr Herme's position with that of others associated with ASIS, who had been forced to resign under less than ideal circumstances.

It has come to News Diary's notice that there was something more in Mr Hermes resignation from ASIS. While with ASIS, be was based in London and was in contact with George Blake, the notorious British diplomat who was a Soviet agent Blake was arrested by the British and received a 42-year prison sentence, the longest in British penal history. He later became the only prisoner to escape from Wormwood Scrubs and now lives in the Soviet Union. There is no suggestion that Mr Hermes was in any way compromised by his contact with Blake, but he resigned as a re- Queensland's Liberal Party has started on a long climb back to power by wooing the National Party for a joint Senate ticket Page 6 tH rumori 'Boy in the Bush' impresses a boy in the city IN a fine weekend of television, the hardy adventures of young Pommy Grant in the ABC's new drama 'The Boy in the Bush' proved the most visually entrancing. From the opening bars of Bruce Smea-ton's jaunty 'Borsalino' style theme to the final brooding stares with which Steve Bisley's jealous Esau tried to wither Kenneth Branagh's "new this production cantered along splendidly, rewarding those who had put such obvious effort into casting, scripts, and the choice of locations.

'The Boy in the Bush' (Channel 2 at 8.25 last night), made with England's Channel 4 and Portman Productions, is a two-parter based on the novel that D. H. Lawrence wrote in collaboration with "amateur" writer Mollie Skinner, whom he met during his stay in Australia. It is a story with all the familiar Law-rentian elements: civilised man against the powers of nature, men competing fiercely for the affections of women, and class rivalry. We were left in no doubt how we should feel about the hero.

Jack Grant; he was shown at the start to be headstrong but gallant, and there was nothing in the episode to suggest different Sent out to Western Australia in 1882 to become a man, the young Englishman tackled the difficulties head-on and we saw him get over the initial homesickness to win a place of respect in his new world. Branagh, apparently one of Britain's hottest young actors today, was an excellent Grant shifting cleverly from the diffident newcomer to the confident young station-hand. Sigrid Thornton as Monica, the flirtatious minx who has the newcomer in turmoil displayed every one of the one thousand and one facial tricks in her repertoire, and still managed to charm us. As to Hugh Whitemore's adaptation itself, I have some minor reservations. The thinning-out of the early part of the book tended to make the scene-setting in the TV version a little jerky.

Capital idea THE capital's biggest building project is the construction of the new parliament house. Or at least it was until early February when about half of the 600 building workers went on strike demanding six weeks' severance pay for every year they work on the site. The remaining workers were sacked by the Parliament House Construction Authority and sacked they remain.

Only now, however, has a tid-bit about the style in which they went out emerged. When the remaining employees learned they were about to be dismissed they hooked-up the giant on-site cranes to five temporary on-site buildings and lifted them over the Cyclone fence which surrounds the site. The buildings are now outside the fence as the headquarters and accom The Costigan Royal Commission could be given longer to hand over to the proposed Crimes Commission.
