Some 13 evening seminars will be held over nine weeks, beginning in Melbourne on 8 October and moving to Sydney on 14 October The first seminar will be taken by Brian Kavanagh, winner of the AFI award for feature editing, for the film 'Frog Dreaming'. Other seminars will be taken by Mark Lewis (feature sound, 'Rebel') and Peter Best and Bruce Rowland (feature music score, 'Rebel'), along with Glenda Ham-bly (original feature screenplay, 'Fran'). Other seminar speakers are Karin Altmann (best documentary, non-feature director, 'Raoul Wallenberg: Between the Lines'), Rob Marchand (direction, non-feature, 'The Cellist') and Roger Kirk and Brian Thompson (feature costume and production design, 'Rebel'). that is modern Ulster. It began life as a play for radio; and in that form won a couple of major awards.

The stage version betrays its origin at several points. It is, nonetheless, a fine, compassionate and warmly human piece. Gee's approach is microcosmic Instead of trying to tell the whole sorry tale of Northern Ireland with the aid of facts, figures and documentation, she goes behind the headlines to present war-torn Ulster through the experiences of two ordinary British soldiers, sent to serve there. One (Christopher Connelly) is a Londoner with a young and pregnant wife. For him, Ulster is a commitment and a challenge.

"I go where I'm sent," he tells his wife when she tries to stop him going. I 122 Whltehorse Road, Rlngwood. 871 1211, AH 871 J417, 87 MM. a CARTER SON RY. LTD.

i Restrained view of defoliant link HAMPTON 81 LINACRE ROAD ESMOND O'GRADY, who FILMS writes for "The Age' from will be lecturing at the NEILJILLETT The other (Kevin Harrington) has nothing more on his mind than counting the minutes and seeing' his term of duty successfully through to the end. However, he becomes romantically involved with an Irish girl, and in so doing unwittingly seals his own fate. The background of the troubles is etched-in lightly, with British soldiers patrolling the streets, ma-' chineguns at the ready. The atmo-; sphere is one of tension so much so, one of the characters says, that "you can reach out and touch the The play begins with the two sides, locals and invaders, in a stand-off position. To each other, they are simply Bloody Brits or Paddywhacks.

But as the play develops and their lives cross, the barriers are lowered and they come to see each other more as individuals. At the same time, they discover that in Ulster individuals are forced to take sides; and in the act of doing so, relationships are sev- ered and lives put into jeopardy. The play is written in brief, dovetailed scenes with the mother (Rona McLeod), seated alone at the side, acting as a kind of chorus while the action moves with the inevitability of Greek tragedy to its bloody conclusion. Bruce Myles's production for the MTC sketches in the dramatic details neatly and effectively. From each of his six players he -has coaxed good, sharply contrasting performances.

Kevin Harrington and Janet Andrewartha are particularly good as the star-crossed lovers. Their playing has a nice romantic edge to it growing as it does from initial shyness to joy and pleasure in each other's presence. In the end, the play takes no political stance. What does come through very forcibly, though, is a call for reason and an end to hatred. In short a night of strong and thought-provoking theatre.

GENT ORANGE is the vil-Jl lain of 'A Street To Die' (Carlton Moviehouse), and the film's virtues and faults are not affected by the recent finding of an Australian royal commission that the defoliant is innocent as charged. The commission found no link between chemical agents used in the Vietnam War and the health of Vietnam veterans and their offspring.

The film, produced, written and directed by Bill Bennett, argues that there is a link. 'A Street To Die' is based on the story of Colin and Lorraine Simpson, in 1982 the Repatriation Review Tribunal granted Mrs -Simpson a widow's pension, having decided it could not be sure beyond reasonable doubt that Mr Simpson's death from malignant lymphoma was not due to his exposure to herbicides in Vietnam. This decision helped to set the Agent Orange Royal Commission in train. For legal reasons, the film changes the couple's name to Turner, but Bill Bennett says that in all essentials what is shown is true. The street of the title is in a Syd- without distorting the truth as he sees it But if the film is messy in shape and at times clumsy with details, it is still a fine achievement Its restraint in handling such an emotional story is remarkable.

For instance, far more experienced directors might have made mawkish nonsense of the scene in which Lorraine and her sons bury Colin's ashes in the backyard. Bennett handles this scene with beautifully controlled tenderness. There is similar control in the performances by Chris Haywood this year's AFI winner as best actor and Jennifer Cluff as the Turners. They are completely convincing as an ordinary couple, loving and argumentative, who are powerless to stop the crumbling of their happiness. Bennett a 32-year-old journalist and television documentary maker, raised most of the film's $340,000 budget himself, mainly by doorknocking North Queensland accountants.

He says he has raised enough money for two more features. If they build on the skills shown in 'A Street To Die' they will be worth watching. RICHMOND 31 FRASER STREET A VERY WELL PRESENTED VICTORIAN TIMBER HOME OFFERS 3-BEDRM. ACCOM. EXCELLENT widow's continuation of his fight and her being granted a pension.

As a piece of drama, 'A Street To Die' reflects life's untidiness; it is a telemovie that goes on too long, not a feature film that works artistically throughout its length. At its best (the first 60 minutes) it is a moving, well-modulated account of a young man, with the support of his wife and two small sons, bravely facing the inevitability of death and furious with what he believes to be a combination of military carelessness and bureaucratic whitewash. With Colin's death, the film is deprived of its centre and becomes a bit of a drag. I don't think this is because the royal commission's findings, released after the film was made, render Mrs Turner's victory hollow. It is more a case of Bennett's failure to find an accommodation between the needs of cinematic drama and his determination to tell the story LOCATION CL.

Some of the houses are occupied by Vietnam veterans, several of whom believe their own and their children's mental and physical disabilities were caused by Agent Orange and other chemicals.
