Barrett, founder of 'Journalism ex-dean at Columbia NEW YORK Edward Ware Barrett, the founder of the Columbia Journalism Review and a leading figure in American journalism, has died after a long illness.

He was 79. Mr. Barrett, who died Monday, founded the Journalism Review in 1962, creating the first national magazine devoted to journalistic criticism. He was its publisher and editorial chairman from 1975 through 1982, when he became publisher emeritus. Mr.

Barrett joined Newsweek in 1933, serving in various positions until joining the war effort in 1942 as chief of what became the Office of Strategic Services. He went back to Newsweek from 1946 to 1950 before returning to government service as assistant secretary of state.
