Sackinsky (10-1) didn't fair well against the Bulldogs in his previous outing. He relieved Stanford starter and Ail-American Mike Mussina in the blowout Sunday. Sackinsky lasted one-third of an inning, allowing four hits and five runs, four earned. Georgia greeted the Cardinal freshman the way they left him, roughing him up for two first-inning runs. McKay Smith led off with a single reached third on Jeff Cooper's single. Cooper stole second and catcher Troy Tallman's throw went into center field. Smith scored on the error and Cooper went to third, eventually scoring on Brian Jester's groiindout. Stanford scored the first run of the Series off Bulldogs starter Dave Fleming (12-6) when Hammonds singled to lead off the fourth and scored on a double by Troy Paulsen. Fleming dug himself a hole in the seventh when Tallman doubled with one out. Roger Burnett walked and Tim Griffin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mike Eicher hit a nubbcr in front of the plate, but Fleming had no play after fielding the ball and Tallman scored the tying run. Hammonds then rifled a shot past third baseman Cooper to score Burnett and Griffin for a 4-2 lead. SU's Manahan signs with Mariners The Arizona Republic r. Arizona State second baseman Anthony Manahan signed a professional contract Wednesday with the Seattle Mariners. Manahan, a junior who was chosen 6 Baseball America's All-America first team, was taken with a sandwich jiick between the first and second .rounds. He was the 38th player drafted. 2':, Seattle scout Gordon Blakcly, who -signed Manahan, said the Mariners 2'are excited to have him. He's an Excellent player a good prospect to jet to the big leagues in a hurry." Manahan and Blakely declined to llisclose the size of his bonus, though Manahan confirmed it was "around ix figures." t Manahan said, "I like the club and "J 'like the way they treat their players. Of the 24 players on their major league roster, 1 3 are products of their Jfarm system." College Baseball Briefs Manahan said he will report with other signccs next week for an evaluation program at Seattle's Tempe training facility. He said he hopes to be assigned to the Hampton, Va., Peninsula Pilots of the Class A Carolina League. Manahan batted .366 this season, had 81 RBIs and 66 runs scored. He hit 10 home runs and stole nine bases in 14 attempts. Veit signs with Astros Mesa Community College first baseman Steve Veit recently signed with the Houston Astros for a $40,000 bonus, said his father, Bill Veit. Veit, a 1988 graduate of Horizon High School, was drafted by the Astros last year, but chose to play his sophomore season at Mesa. He batted .391, hit 17 home runs and had 69 RBIs, helping the Thundcrbirds finish third in the National Junior College World Scries in Grand Junction, Colo. Veit's homers and RBIs are school records. Veit, 6-foot-6, 220 pounds, who signed the day before this year's draft, has been assigned to the Astros' Class A affiliate in Auburn, Ala. Also, Glendale Community College left-handed pitcher Scott Dodd, a Grccnway High graduate, was taken by the Oakland A's in the 18th round of this year's free-agent draft. Munoz, a junior, was 15-2 and had a 2.39 ERA. Williams, a senior, tatted .401, hit 25 homers and had 78 RBIs. Munoz was drafted in the fifth round Monday by the Cleveland Indians. Williams was drafted in the 23rd round by the California Angels. Kelly was not eligible for the draft. The three finalists will appear at an awards banquet June 21 in Houston, where the winner will be announced. The award is named after R. E.
