Th Ag; Saturday, January 26, 1963 13 SAVE I Cowdrey Held This One Kol's Idol Has Form to Score Trots Win By Jack Bateg NTER-DOMINION Championship candidatcr Kol's Idol and Opal Chief should fight out the finish of the Goulburn Handicap at the show grounds trotting tonight. NEW; BATSMEN W. SIDE Recovery in Shield SYDNEY, Friday. New South Wales was rescued from batting disgrace by 17-year-old Doug Walters in the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at the S.C.G. today.

Walters defied the Victorian pace attcak which had dismissed the side's top batsmen to make a fighting 60 and top score for N.S.W. for some time when third, beaten six yards, to Idle Raider in the 11 furlongs. Camlra Free-For-AU last Saturday. She will appreciate the extra three furlongs tonight. Best of the scratch group may be Highland Heath and Tiara Court, both of whom have raced well in open class events lately.

Future Raider, winner of Chief in the Oreetlngs Handicap on January 6. Taking a line on these ram, she should have the measure of several soaart ahead of her on scratch. Opal Chief's form for this race was his win In the Oreetlngs Handicap. He suffers severe interference at the start when eighth to Idle Raider in the Hunter Cup. However, despite his bril- ft inni iR UaVv Ik va $mtstzstz -I '4; a -Y balls, openers Grabame Thomas and Warren Saunders were out without a run having been scored.

Thomas was bowled by a fast-swinging yorker the second ball of the innings and Saunders was out without even facing a ball. Saunders was run out when Marks played a ball to mid-on. Saunders started down the wicket but could nofregain his crease when he realised the run wasn't there. Marks, a 20-year-old, had to start his first-class cricket career with N.S.W. 30 and Ian Meckiff and Colin Guest operating with a new ball.

Two "Lives" Marks weathered the storm admirably. He reach 12 stylishly, but had two "lives" before he was caught in slips by Keith Stackpole off Alan Connolly for 30. Stackpole earlier had dropped two simple catches off Meckiff. Apart from these two blemishes, Marks played coolly and with discipline. Meckiff was easily the best of the Victorian bowlers, finishing with 465 off 25 overs.

Until he tired late In the day, the batsmen showed no signs of getting the better of him. When the Victorian attack did flag, Frank Misson and Doug Ford put on a handy 33 runs for the ninth wicket. Victoria relied on its pace attack for most of the day, and spinner Keith Klrby bowled only 11 overs for his two wickets. SCOREBOARD NEW SOUTH WALES. First Innings.

In only his second Shield appearance. Walters' second successive hall century was part of an invaluable stand. He came to the crease with S.W. 453. Two runs later Lra Marks, who had scored handy 30 In his Shield debut, was out and N.8.W.

was 655. Walters put on 54 with George Griffiths, 51 with johnny Martin and 38 with Frank Misson. He eventually lost his wicket when Bob Cowper caught him near the mid-wicket fence as he tried to hit leg-spinner Keith Klrby out of the ground. But N.S.W. was then 1198, a far more respectable score than seemed likely as the most experienced batsmen floundered before the pace bowling of Ian Mecklfl and Alan Connolly.

Fair Chase Viofcria now has a reasonable total to chase when, at one time, it seemed that N.S.W. would score less than the 83 of Its first innings against Queensland earlier this month. N.S.W. 's hopes hit rock-bottom today before Ian Meckiff had completed the fust over. In a great spell of five Bowls Side in Clean Sweep Victoria trounced New South Wales 146-91 In the third and last bowls test at Kew yesterday.

It gave Victoria the series 3-0 and in yesterday's match the home side won all five ends. Glyn Boslsto and Arnold O'Brien were the only captains to win all three games. Yesterday's results: Vktocto 1 N.w SMlk Walaa 8.r- L. ntipajru w. j.

Juventus has its Internal troubles and, although the players are in no way involved, the side could be affected and morale may be low. In contrast, Wilhelmina is 100 per cent, fit and team spirit has never been higher. Stoffels, top scorer for Wilhelmina, has shown rare form at practice and if he is on target the Cup holder could take a commanding lead on the section ladder.

Wilhelmina skipper and Victorian pivot, Dick van Alphen, has recovered from a leg injury and his presence will stabilise the Dutch defence. In the second game, George Cross will field a top side, but there is a possibility that skipper Don Hodgson will be a late withdrawal. numbers for Moonee Volley races on Ballarat, January 30 Acceptances for Ballarat Wednesday, January 30: Betty had the edge on Glenys when they last met in Melbourne at the Commonwealth Games trials in October and this could be the case again. The Sydney girl has been performing consistently in inter-club this year and believes she is running better now than at any time of her comeback. New South Wales's two other entrants in the 100 yards will be Marilyn Black who will also compete In the 220 and 14-year-old star Sue Henry. Sue is the most outstanding prospect of her age in Australia, and her performances in Sydney this year have been remarkable. Long Jump Another highlight will be the long-jump clash between Victoria's Pam Kilborn and Helen Frith (New South Wales).

Little separates them and it would not surprise if a leap better than Pam's national long-Jump record of 20 ft. 4H in. was needed to win. Pam will almost certainly win the 80 metres hurdles, while Helen Frith will provide most opposition to her team mate, Mlchele Mason, in the high Jump. The 440 yards, in which New South Wales girl Rhonda Oardiner will have her first real test, should prove an exciting race.

Consistent Rhonda, a tall, strong girl, has been running consistently behind Betty Cuthbert in Sydney quarter miles and she should extend the Victorian record holder for the distance, Judy Amoore.
