He started in real estate in 1953 and always had at the back uf his mind the dream of starting his own office at Sunshine. He decided in 1964 to try to make that dream come true. Business boomed and by 1969 he was employing 13 people and had to move to larger offices at the corner of Hampshire Road and Devonshire Road, Sunshine, now known as Kontek House. He also opened a second office in 1969, at Melton. This was followed bv a St.

Albans office in 1972 and a Moonee Ponds office last year. Two new offices opened last year, at Altona and VVerribee. John Kontek and Sons Pty. Ltd. now employs about 75 people and sells about 200 properties a monthi With the co-operation of the City of Sunshine twice as much open space as is usually provided.

Response to the 15 infant welfare centres operating in Sunshine is staggering. At least 99 per cent, of mothers having children are involved in the infant welfare programme. The service is run by eight infant welfare sisters, who have a close liaison with kindergartens. Some of the kinders are located in the welfare centres. The children's development can be followed by the sisters till they go to school and many problems can be detected which have no relation to the baby-family care problem.

For example, young couples with financial problems can be referred to ether welfare services. Some families did not realise subsidised medical benefits were available, and the centres often detect problems like this. The centres provide baby care, diet guidance for mother and child, and play an important role in giving young mothers (and fathers) support and confidence. The Senior Infant Welfare Sister (Sister Mann) said "Loneliness is one of the problems we have here. This is where we can help, by getting the mothers together and introducing them at our centres." A series of lectures and fiims are planned to improve the quality of family life.

The programme would run through the library and the State Welfare Department. "Frequently people will say 'I didn't know that service was available'. This is what we are trying to overcome in explaining our roles in the community," Sister Mann said. The Home Help service has a problem it has a very large waiting list. But patients are not doing the waiting It is the ladies from the local community wanting to become home iielps.

There are now 36 home helpers in Sunshine, caring for approximately 160 families per week. The service takes the place of the mother in homes were she is unable to carry on through illness or confinement and also helps the chronically ill and aged "We are really here to help anybody," the Home Help Supervisor (Mrs. Caili Wherrett) said. Home help works in conjunction with other services in the community (including doctors and hospitals), and the office, next to the council chambers, is open from 8.30 to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
