RING 878 8504 or 62 5607. I lr I 5J ANNUM Odyssey's claims to success queried A prominent psychologist last light questioned the effectiveness of the Odyssey House drug rehabilitation programme. Dr Bob Montgomery, senior lecturer in psychology at La Trobe University, speaking on the ABC TV programme, 'Nationwide', said that Odyssey's founders had not published any studies in scientific journals to back up their claims on its effectiveness. He said Odyssey diverted private and public funds from established and proved drug rehabilitation schemes. "I haven't seen any scientific evidence that the Odyssey House, programme works at all," he said.

"Odyssey House creates a very emotional community atmosphere. People going through that type of group experience will often tell themselves, 'Gee, things are going great now, I feel verv different'. "But when they go back into the world, back into the same community setting that created the problems in the first place, unless the treatment programme has given them new coping skills they are not going to stay off drugs." Dr Montgomery said confusion about the success of the Odyssey House programme arose because their figures measured the rate of rehabilitation of those who finished the programme rather than those who started it. ONE YEAR BUT LESS THAN 2 YEARS By ROSSLYN BEEBY The new chairman of the Equal Opportunity Board, Mrs Joan Dwyer, hopes to widen the interpretation of discrimination when she takes over. Mrs Dwyer, a barrister, whose appointment was announced by the Premier's Department yesterday, has strong views on the subject of class discrimination.

"Women are not the only ones who experience discrimination," she said. "There's discrimination based on poverty class discrimination which is quite wrong. You find that people are treated differently on the basis of what they look like or how they speak." Mrs Dwyer speaks quietly and with a hint of self-effacement about her new job. She expresses some regret thac she will have to give up her law practice to take over as chairman is too of the board that has scored some important political points against sexual prejudice. "I like the idea of helping people in difficult situations but I suppose I'll still be able to do that with the board.

But as chairman I won't be as close to people as I am in my present III I ANNUM U1 officially on 2 March, is not Mrs Dwyer's first contact with the Equal Opportunity Board. Two years ago her husband John, a Queen's Counsel, argued the case before the board when Ansett airlines refused to employ Deborah Wardley as a trainee pilot. When his wife becomes chairman Mr Dwyer probably will not argue another case before the board. "There probably would be complications if he had to appear before me in a hearing, so I don't suppose he'll take any more cases along those lines," Mrs Dwyer said. Although Mrs Dwyer says she doesn't know enough about the workings of the board to contemplate any immediate changes, she has some ideas.

She would like to see it empowered to deal with cases of racial discrimination and discrimination against the handicapped. Women, she says, are still victims of discrimination but sexual prejudice is obviously on the decline. In her years in law she can recall no specific instances of sexual discrimination except "in the early "Sometimes if I was speaking to a client in disagreement they might suggest that as a woman I wasn't exactly qualified, but that happened only occasionally." But she has had experience of racial prejudice. She was born in Melbourne after her Austrian-Jewish parents fled from the Nazis. "Growing up in Australia after the war I had several bad experiences because of race and religion.

That definitely had some bearing on my present convictions. I don't believe anyone should suffer pain at the hands of any form of prejudice." Mrs Dwyer: sexual prejudice declining. profession. It's not the same as the informal contact' you establish with your clients as a barrister." Her new responsibilities include dealing with applications for exemption from thte Equal Opportunity Act and sitting on tribunal hearings of discrimination complaints. She replaces Mrs Deirdre Fitzgerald, who retired from the post last year.

"We will follow the US pattern, which I understand is five years," he said- Of those who had successfully completed the programme in the US, the majority had stayed off drugs, although more than half had not completed it. Dr Montgomery challenged Mr Thomson's estimate of the cost of the programme $100 per person a week and said that it was developed for a "tiny The programme "siphoned off funds that could be used for other health purposes, he said. Mr Thomson said that Dr Montgomery had not seen the programme at first hand, and was" not in a position to comment on its effectiveness. Mr Joe Lamberti. the State director of Odyssey House, said later that Federal and State Government in the United States had been funding the programme for 15 years.

"Any of those funding agencies would possess documentation of our accountability," he said. "Ever since we came here it has always been our policy to open the doors to anyone who wants to examine the programme." Mr Lamberti said that Dr Judianne Densen-Gerber. the founder of Odyssey, had presented many papers to conferences, including the international convention on drug abuse in Rome last year. "I am quite sure-that Dr Densen-Gerber has published papers in the relevant journals," he said. "Dr Montgomery has had ample opportunity to come to the programme and "see it for himself.
