REPUBLIC MAIL The Arizona Republic Sunday, June 17, 1981 Recognition of Navajo cemetery asked A WHY BUY A 30' OR 32' POOL? NOW LA CASA OFFERS 34' POOLS FOR THE SAME PRICE! CUSTOM SHAPES. TO 500 SQ. FT. 86' PERIMETER CMm Banks said he feels the Fort Defiance Cemetery meets these requirements. Until 1943, there were no cemeteries on the reservation.

Instead, most Navajos followed tribal tradition of burying their dead in private, unmarked graves. One reason for this, according to Navajo historians, is a desire to keep the graves undisturbed and free from thieves because many Navajos buried their loved ones adorned with some of their turquoise jewelry or wrapped in a favorite Navajo rug. There also was a fear that the graves would be disturbed by enemies of the Navajos. Burial sites of past Navajo leaders were kept secret and revealed only to a few close relatives of the deceased. For this reason, the gravesites of most of the Navajo leaders before World War II remain a secret.

BIA seeking to place burial ground for vets on historical register By Bill Donovan Special for The Republic I WINDOW ROCK A decision back in 1943 by federal military Officials to have Navajo veterans buried in Christian ceremonies has ted to efforts by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to get the Fort Defiance Cemetery declared a national historic 6ite. Kimball Banks, an archaeologist for the BIA, said he plans to submit an application this month to the Arizona Historical Preservation Office. If approval is given by the Arizona agency, the request will be forwarded to the U.S. secretary of the interior, who has final authority to' determine which sites should go on the national registry. Banks admitted that usually cemeteries do not qualify for such a designation.

The law creating historic sites was passed to protect them from disturbance, but cemeteries already are given such protection under another federal law. But Banks and various veterans organizations on the reservation that back the proposal say the Fort Defiance Cemetery is different. "There is a certain amount of pride (in the Navajo people) for the role they played in World War II," he said. "This will provide more recognition." Federal law requires that places designated as historic sites be associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad pattern of American history or associated with the lives of people significant in the nation's history. a P.

VVe feel that the four-day week will increase attendance and provide a better quality of education," Newlon said. "In this area, we have a problem with kids missing school once a month or 60 to go see doctors. They would have the extra weekday with this." The Mammoth-San Manuel School District, northeast of Tucson, seriously considered switching to the four-day week but has delayed its decision for a year because of upcoming changes in, state-mandated achievement tests from the Iowa Basic Skills Test to the California Achievement Test. "We were told that the new achievement tests we would be using are more difficult, so we thought the results might prejudice everyone against the shortened week," said Chuck Johnson, a school-board member.

"A lot of people around here are really excited about it, however, because it's been successful at Patagonia," Johnson added. NOW SAVE 33! Mosaic Tile CUT 25!
