But for the rest of us, he suggests, water might be best. The Royal Horse" Artillery segment turns the tables on the clever show-jumping girls because all 200 riders in the King's Troop (named after King George VI) are males. Cadets train for more than 18 months before they're ready to join the team. Then they might be lucky enough to take part in the Musical Drive, a sort of ballet on horseback in which horse teams drag ancient cannons from World Warl.

My tip is that Galore will become very popular. Don't miss it that is, ir you're not too busy outside grooming your horse. XJk Compiled and written by JTLL MORRIS. i wmttmmmmm i 1 mhf" 4 W. BERT CROFTS, a gentle old saddlemaker at E.J.

Wicks' Saddlery in the English county of Berkshire, savs that for cleaning the top of a saddle there's nothing like a bit of spit. But for the stirrup bars "and your life depends on those" he recommends a couple of drops of oil. 'Horses Galore', a new programme from the BBC, begins on Channel 2 at 5 pm Thursday 24 July, is galloping-full of tiny tips for horse care, snow jumping skill and training in dressage. In the first programme three young riders are given tips and practice in jumping by former champion equestrian Paddy McMahon; old Bert shows us in detail how to clean a saddle; and we have a sneak early-morning preview of rehearsals for the Musical Drive of the Royal Horse Artillery. 'Horses Galore' is rather like a series of items from 'This Week in Britain', and it constantly refers to the "children" who ride, clean saddles and so on, which is annoying.

But its about horses; and that will be good news to everyone who rides, and grooms a pet horse or pony, or simply dreams of some day owning one. In Thursday's programme, Kate (12), Biddy (14) and Sharon (17) guide their horses over a series of jumps, under the encouraging eye of Paddy McMahon. Old videotape footage of Paddy shows him in championship form; but even champions fail. On the tape, Paddy's horse skids at a water-jump, Paddy falls on his face and walks away, and the commentator labels it "another In the segment about saddles, Bert Crofts searches under the leather flaps for little lumps of mud. You won't see this young sleepy-head in 'Horses Galore'.

Three-year-old Elizabeth McDonald of Macclesfield nearly missed her, grand entrance at the second Welsh Pony Show in February this year but she woke in time. No doubt tiny Elizabeth will enjoy the new series. WHERE IS MARIE? IMMEDIATELY after 'Horses Galore' at 5.30 pm comes the first episode of a serial which has been on Channel 2 before: 'The Eagle of the Ninth', based on the popular novel by Rosemary Sut-cliffe. It's the story of Marcus, a young centurion in the Roman army in 129 A.D., who sets out to discover what happened to his father and the whole of. the Ninth Legion Which disappeared in Britain, just beyond Hadrian's.

Wall. 'The Eagle of the Ninth' transports us backwards in time more than 1800 years. Teamed with 'Horses Galore', it should make Channel 2 a popular spot on the television dial on Thursdays between 5 and 6 pm. MY FRIENDS and I were wondering what is going on with the new children's show Marie Van Maaren was going to host this year on Channel 10 ('Studio 10'). We liked her very much when she did 'The Early Bird Show'; and she said in the final Peter Couchman's Melbourne show that she had just finished a pilot programme for the new series 'Studio 10'.

That was in December. Can you please tell us what has happened? CATHERINE WALKER, (Oakleigh). Dear Catherine, A Channel 10 spokesman told me this week that 'Studio 10' was only a pilot programme something to be tried out inside the station. The series is not in production at present, although Marie Van Maaren is still on contract to the channel. Another disappointing piece of news from Channel 10 is that they are not now going to run the new horse-story series, 'Thunder', which was to have begun two weeks ago on weekday afternoons.

They say they haven't enough episodes on hand. But it would have made a change to see just a few. Instead of 'Thunder', at 4.30 on weekday afternoons, Channel 10 is at present running 'The Lost which we have already seen several times.
