Rating: Drought in the 'Heartland' Heartland, the new sitcom that immediately follows Live-In (7:30 p.m. on Channel 10), has greater potential, but the entertainment its premiere offered was nearly as weak. As the name suggests, Heartland is set in the nation's breadbasket, where Nebraska wheat farmers Tom (Richard Gilliland) and Casey (Kathleen Layman) and their three children are managing to stay one step ahead of foreclosure. Not helping the situation is Casey's crusty father, B.L.

(Brian Keith), who has moved in after losing his farm at auction and is managing to muck up everything, except the pig sty. Heartland is filled with pig and privy jokes and, occasionally, a funny line. When Tom emerges from the cellar to check on the condition of the house after a twister, he shouts back down to the family, "It's still here, but there's a witch under the house and everything's in color." Maybe they live on the Nebraska-Kansas line. Creatively, Heartland has a chance. It's a good-hearted show.

Keith brings an underlying warmth to his character, and the children, especially farmer-to-be Gus (Devin BEST BETS Late night Above pettiness Bryant Gumbel hooks up with the Discovery astronauts for a live, eight-minute interview during the second half-hour of Today. Michael, a traveling salesman, matched with Toni, also a Raidcrette, by saying "bubble bath." Ron, a traveling salesman, matched with Kimiko, another Raidcrette, by saying "disrobe." This produced giggles, because earlier, Kimiko had admitted to once having water-skied in the buff. Nonetheless, the round of questioning on what is being touted as "America's funniest romance game show" ended with no one gaining an advantage. The new syndicated show is Straight to the Heart, and it premieres at 1 1 p.m.

Monday on independent KUTP-TV (Channel 45). The surprise, considering the lasciviously snickering manner in which similar shows have been staged, is that it's kind of cute. Host Michael Burger is quick with the quips, and the double entendre that inevitably crop up do not come off as sleazy or overly manufactured. Most game shows are empty-headed, but in the case of Straight to the Heart, that's easily overlooked. Straight to the Heart is rather simplistic, and the excitement does not exactly build as the show progresses but it does nonetheless provide upbeat entertainment.
