Thursday, September 20, 1956 "Hometown Newspaper For firookshire and Katy, Texas" THREE Soil Conservation District News by Norman Hinchliffe P. 0. Box 31 Hempstead, Texas Watch for election notices in Zone 3 of the Nflvasota Soil Conservation District. This election will be in Octo? her to elect a supervisor for a five year term. A.

Wm. Schild of Waller is the present supervisor. A total of 83 applications have been received by the local Soil Conservation Service Office this yefer for assistance on irrigation land leveling, drainage, and ponds. Latest requests for ponds include Joe Davis, Dudley Gregory, J. F.

Tompkfns, Frank Krzenskf, S. E. Peek, B. B. Klrkpatrick, W.

F. Cook, A. K. Cauthern, C. H.

Thomas, Mose Williams, and S. D. David. Construction has been completed 'on the ponds for Davis, Gregory, Peek, and Cook. Other ponds have been completed recently for W.

C. Compton, C. H. Menke, Geo. M.

Pattison, and John Kelm. Such ponds have multiple value. Foremost is furnishing an ample supply of stock water in areas to obtain uniform distribution of grazing. Ponds conserve water and in preventing runoff they cut down on erosion. In enabling better pasture management, ponds indirectly assist in conservation of pasture plants and land.

And ponds, when properly managed, can be a source of food and fun for the family. GRAND OPENING Geo. McNeir Hardware Saturday, September 22nd at CENTER 6717 Old Richmond Rd. WE INVITE ALL OUR KATY FRIENDS TO COME AND VISIT US 1 Geo. McNeir Two acres of good grass and legume pasture for each grown cow in the fall is a good goal. Cows wintered this way usually have good calves by their side at weaning time. And the protected soil is slow to blow or wash away. A good winter mature may reduce feed bills, extend length of grazing season, improve summer growth of base grasses, increase calf crop and their market value, im- nrove the soil and its water holding capacity, and save labor in feeding.

Take advantage of the cost-sharing available through the Agricultural Conservation Program. October is usually the best time to plant winter pastures. Earlier plantings often drought out, and others as late as December may be winter killed and seldom make enough growth for winter grazing. Stop by the local Soil Conservation Service office for information on the -many grasses and legumes adapted to the soils of this area. Neighbor Hews Of Addicks and Barker By Mrs.
