Bible Year Begins With Thanksgiving THANKSGIVING services for the 350th anniversary of the Authorised Version will be held in hundreds of Victorian churches tomorrow. Bible Society Appointment for Chief Justice The Chief Justice of Victoria (Sir Edmund Herring) has been appointed a vice-president of the parent committee of the British and Foreign Bible Society in London.

Missionary Became Colonel Mr. A. E. Norrish, field secretary of the Bible and Medical Missionary Society, who will visit Melbourne this month, has a strange record: He was called from missionary service into the Indian army. He served with the Gurkha Rifles for six years, becoming a lieutenant-colonel.

His missionary society is actively associated with the recently opened land of the Gurkhas, Nepal. Mr. Norrish will preach at St. Hilary's, Kew. at 11 a.m.

on March 26, and at St. Jude's, Carlton, in the evening. During Easter he will attend the Belgrave Heights Convention as a guest speaker, and he will address a meeting in Collins Street Baptist Church on Friday. April 14. He is actively engaged In the Christian Literature Institute In Delhi, and the Union Biblical Seminary, Yeotmal, near Nagpur.

The Bible and Medical Missionary Fellowship wonts In India, Pakistan and Nepal, and places missionaries intstrategtc spheres of service in cooperation with others. Its missionaries also have a hospital on wheels, complete with operating theatre and pathology laboratory, working In the villages of Lower Sind, West Pakistan. Educational channels and methods to be commandeered for the purpose of Bible reading. Extension of the distribution of the Bible by the churches, which must accept more responsibility In this direction. Further celebrations throughout the year had been planned.

Clinton, a lecturer at the College of the Bible, will begin an interim ministry at Swanston Street unurcn 01 unnst tomorrow, during the convalescent of Mr. a. Macnaugnton. from Roman Catholic schools and colleges will be prominent. Members of Irish national and Roman Catholic socle-ties and organisations will march and pupils of Irish dancing classes will give displays on decorated floats.

After the procession Benediction will be given in St. Patrick's Cathedral. Solemn High Mass for the feast of St. Patrick will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Cathedral next Friday, at 10.30 a.m.

The preacher will be Rev. Father N. McNaboe, of the Oblate Fathers. The St. Patrick's concert and pageant will be held at the Town Hall on Friday night Baptist Missionary Won D.F.C.

Rev. P. N. Ewing, who won the DJ.O. with the in Burma, and then entered the ministry, is visiting Melbourne after 11 years on the mission field in Assam.

He will address the Baptist Women's Missionary Union in Albert Hall on Wednesday morning and will address a Baptist Men's Society rally there on Friday night. Mr. Ewlng, a Western Australian, became impressed with the need for missionary work in the Indian theatre while serving on. the Burma front. On demobilisation he entered the Baptist Theological College, Melbourne, and after completing the four years course went to the mission field.

He will spend March In Melbourne, and then go to New South It will inaugurate the Bible Commemoration year and start a four-day Bible celebration that will have Its counterparts throughout the English-speaking world. Features of this will be: Tomorrow Thanksgiving services In churches. Attention will be drawn to the rich heritage ol the Authorised Version, and its triumphant progress during the 350 years. Monday Bible Year Council's display float in the Moomba procession. This will spearhead the Bible Reading Campaign which Is the ultimate objective of the Bible year.

Tuesday. World-wide release of the New Translation of the New Testament. The first edition will be almost a million copies, the printing order having been progressively increased from the original 250,000. A Thanksgiving service will be held in St. Paul's Cathedral at 1.15 p.m.

Archdeacon T. W. Thomas will preach. Wednesday. Mass Thanksgiving meeting In Melbourne Town Hall, 8 p.m.

This will bo attended by the Administrator of Victoria (Sir Charles Lowe) and Lady Lowe. The Moderator-General of the Presbyterian Church (Rt. Rev. A. C.

Watson) will preside and the Archbishop of Melbourne (Most Rev. Dr. P. Woods) will give the address. The music will be under the direction of Mr.

L. E. Warner. Moomba The Moomba float will be a 30-foot tractor-drawn semi-trailer. The secretary of the Bible Year Council iMr.

S. Russell Baker) will officially launch the Bible Reading Campaign at the Town Hall Thanksgiving meeting. Presentation copies of the New Translation will be given to Sir Charles Lowe and the heads of the churches. A State-wide network of similar meetings had also been organised with emphasis on the leading provincial centres, such as Oeelong, Bendigo, Ballarat, Warr-nambool and Swan Hill. Mr.

Baker said he felt this was not only a great year for observance but a year of unprecedented opportunity. Sadlq Masih, curate of the Cathedral of the Resurrection, Lahore, has arrived in Melbourne to spend a year studying at Ridley College. Mr. Masih was educated at the C.M.S. High School. Narowel, Pakistan, and studied theology at Kha-tauli, India.

Robert Boyd, previously of Cranbourne, will begin his ministry at Cairns Memorial erian Church tomorrow. Christian Education Methods New methods of Christ-Ian education will be examined and discussed at the second ecumenical Church and Group Life laboratory which will open at the Churches of Christ Centre, Monbulk, on Monday. Staff members of the General Board of Religious Education of the Church of England In Australia have been asked to lead the conference. The director (Mr. V.

K. Brown), Rev. K. Jago (adult work and leader training) and Rev. P.

Prentice (youth work and audiovisual aids), with four of the delegates from the first ecumenical laboratory, will present the programme. The laboratory has been arranged by the Australian Council of Christian Education, and will be attended by 27 delegates from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational churches and the Churches of Christ will be represented. The Y.M.O.A. plans to send a delegate also.

Cambridge. Dr. Morris recently returned from 15 months in Britain and the United States, during which he was Guest Professor at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia. He holds degrees In science, divinity, theology and philosophy. He will preach at St.

Paul's Cathedral tomorrow morning and at Holy Trinity, Wiliamstown, at Evensong. Sisters Buy Property The 210-acre property of the late Cr. W. A. Comeadow at Woodend has been taken over bv the Missionary Sis ters of the Society of Mary, who bought it for 32,750 wnen it was auctioned recently.

Twenty year old Miss Swan, who has held a driving licence since she was 15, agreed with Mr. T. O. Pater-son, former director of the Australian Road Safety Council, that back-seat drivers had an Important part to play in road safety. "No one gives unnecessary Instructions from the back seat.

If there is a back-seat drlvre, then not a very competent one at the wheel," Miss Swan said.
