A Scottsdale company headed by developer Eric Zimmerman is proposing to acquire majority ownership of the stations, as well as construction permits for five low-power television outlets controlled by KUSK-TV. A purchase oflcr made March 21 by Visions or ZVI, suggests that KUSK-TV is in shaky financial shape, having approximately $200,000 in unpaid bills $100,000 of which are past due and outstanding loans of $2.7 million. ZVI would pay off the bills and assume responsibility for the loans, its takeover contingent upon approval by the Federal Communications Commission. However, KUSK-TV president Bill Sauro said ZVI's figures are "not accurate. We have no need for (a bailout)." Sauro said that although he is close to a deal with Zimmerman, there are other offers on the table.

"We've got about four cooking," he said, acknowledging that new majority ownership likely will be announced soon. Zimmerman's plan for the KUSK-TV operation, which simulcasts on channels 7 and 27, would be to add three additional low-power outlets by Thanksgiving channels 55 in north Phoenix, 23 in Scottsdale and 17 in Mesa. The three low-power stations, along with Channel 27, would then be interconnected, simulcasting with Channel 7 half of the time. Zimmerman said the rest of the broadcast day would be filled with live and taped local programming. "I'm going to create a station in Phoenix that's going to be for the community," said Zimmerman, who said channels 43 in Casa Grande and 19 in Yuma, the other two low-power outlets for which KUSK-TV owns permits, would not be developed initially.

Ownership of KUSK-TV is currently divided among Allstate Insurance Co. (33.19 percent); Sauro (29.46 percent); Phoenician Financial Corp. (14.92 percent); Creative Advertising Co. (12 percent) and five other individuals. ZVI is owned by Zimmerman and Phil Mercurio, Zimmerman's partner in Century Management Corp.

New "KQ" KUKQ (1060 AM), which scrapped its country format last week, has adopted an "alternative music" approach and is playing rock tracks that usually don't get airplay on ratings-dependent FM outlets. The new sound bowed Monday evening, but DJs won't go on until 10 a.m. Saturday. The weekday lineup: Rob Trygg from 6 to 10 a.m., Ed Hamlin from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jonathon L.

from 2 to 7 p.m., Jackie Selby from 7 p.m. to midnight, and Tim Stone overnight. Meanwhile, KUPD has hired Jan Williams from WDIZ in Orlando, to handle the evening slot formerly occupied by Mary McCann. Taking on Power 92 Former Power 92 (KKFR) programmer Jim Gillie has filed suit in Maricopa County Superior Court, claiming the station and general manager Fred Weber breached his contract by firing him in February. Gillie, who is represented by Joe Garagiola is seeking $150,000, which is what he would have made had he worked the remaining 15 months of his contract.

"I signed a contract with (Weber). I want him to honor it," Gillie said Thursday. In filing the suit, Gillie reportedly withdrew an offer he made to settle for $75,000. The station had reportedly offered him $15,000, later upping the ante to $25,000. Weber could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Low-power outlet scrapped Country KNIX-FM (102.5) has dropped plans to operate a low-powerTV outlet in the market on Channel 64, which would have featured country videos and been partly simulcast with KNIX-FM. The reason is that the FCC recently upgraded the status of Channel 61, which has been off the air for several years, from a low-power to a full-power operation. Channel 61 would have forced Channel 64 off the air. It is illegal for two stations so close together on the tuner to operate.

KNIX-FM was granted a construction permit for Channel 64 roughly 18 months ago, which it has since turned back to the FCC Five parties have applied for the license of Channel 61. Network notes ABC's sitcom Anything But Love will end a six-week run in the 8:30 p.m. Tuesday slot on April 11. It will be replaced by the comedy Have Faith, in which Joel Higgins (Silver Spoons), Ron Carey (Barney Miller) and Stephen Furst (St. Elsewhere) will star as priests.
