Smith was known as a theological conservative and noted' for his fundamentalist views. She had been a former operatic contralto and concert singer with the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir. Two daughters were born to Smith's first wife, and his second wife bore him five sons and four daughters. Smith was a strong promoter of church-related sports and was interested in flying. He was an honorary brigadier general in the Utah National Guard. Smith left more thaq, 140 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
