'Psychic surgery' denied Innocent plea entered in case By Brent Whiting The Arizona Republic Cris Magno Tizon, who allegedly helped operate a "psychic surgery" operation in Ihe Valley three years ago, pleaded innocent Friday to 18 felony charges stemming from his alleged role in the scheme. 18, the same day that the NBC television show Unsolved Mysteries featured a segment about his uncle, who allegedly had posed as the psychic surgeon. Tizon, 32; his uncle, Gary C. Magno, 49; and Magno's wife, Terry Lynn Magno, 33, were arrested by Phoenix police in August 1986 after Gary Magno performed "surgery" on an undercover police officer, supposedly to cure him of lung cancer. The trio fled on bail, police said. When police arrested Gary Magno, they found in lift waistband a plastic pouch containing vials of red fluid and packets of meat, apparently props used to embellish his "cures." In performing his "surgery," Magno would lay hands on the area of the complaint and, using his props, appear to surgically remove the offending part from the body.

Riggins attributed Tizon's arrest to the Unsolved Mysteries show and said the defendant, who is being held in lieu of $15,070, was brought to Phoenix after agreeing to waive extradition from Nevada.

Court records show that two other people also were indicted with Tizon, but Riggins said she could not disclose their names because they have not been served with court papers. Riggins said police still arc looking for Gary and Terry Magno. Police said that when Gary Magno was arrested at a Phoenix home, an appointment list had at least 100 people scheduled surgery. One alleged victim told The Arizona Republic in 1986 that Magno claimed to be able to remove a tumor without wound or scar and charged $75 for an initial visit, and $50 for follow-up operations. Riggins said that the 17 fraud counts against Tizon involve people who were victims of phony surgery.
