STREET EDiTIOH STATE EDITION Wednesday, November 1, 1989 The Arizona Republic F3 No more silk suits, no more nice guy, Ditka's in control VERDI Chicago Tribune is anathema to Ditka, but being a lovable loser is death. So there Ditka was Monday, taunting us foils of the press with alternating doses of sarcasm, wit and impatient waves of the hand. It was vintage stuff, and the surly Ditka performed without a silk suit but with only the bare essentials shorts, sweat shirt, sneer. Ditka joked about depriving the media of a week's granola when he announced Jim Harbaugh as Sunday's starter in Green Bay, and when Harbaugh heard that from one of us messengers, he seemed gratified, if not surprised. No more surprised than he'll be if Mike Tomczak is summoned from the bullpen outhouse during the next crisis.

At the house of Ditka, creative tension never sleeps. After solidifying the offense until further notice, Ditka then moved on to the defense, which had been so awful Ditka being Ditka, there is always room for ad-libbing, for calling audibles. This is the same man who also acknowledged having only two personalities, Jckyll and Hyde. That has allowed for ample experimentation, especially during his outpatient rehabilitation, and Ditka's palpitating public has given him. plenty of elbow room.

There was the character of Mellow Mike, who realized that winning and losing are important, though not quite as important as breathing. Then there was the philosopher, Diogenes Ditka, who went to Cleveland, of all places, and came back with the ditty, "When we cease to win, we cease to be." Then there was Ricochet Rabbit, who consigned the Bears to a final report card of 4 up and 12 down. But none of these roles fits Ditka so well as the one that finds him stalking the sidelines in a shotgun formation, chewing gum and biting heads off at the same time. tell you, he was absolutely crazy at Soldier Field on Sunday," an earwitness confided Monday. Ditka, who doesn't want this season to escape him, will chase it down without seeking friends or consulting family.

Greg Landry, discovered alive and well at Halas Hall, seems to understand. It is his job to call plays, at least until Ditka reminds everybody that it's his dime and his clipboard. Ditka exerted executive privilege against the Los Angeles Rams as he had against the Cleveland Browns, and if Landry was offended, so did he realize that being humiliated comes with the territory. Since Ditka arrived, so has success been part of the equation, and during that span, Ditka has embarrassed one and all, including himself occasionally. Ditka didn't make it to the Hall of Fame on etiquette, and damned if he's about to travel to Super Bowl XXIV at New Orleans with a fingerbowl.

Being a loser Michael Keller Ditka arrived at the Bears' training camp this week in the same mood as he left Soldier Field on Sunday night. In ill humor. Mad at the world, or at least whatever slice of it he thinks he can control. With a lower lip on which a small airplane could land comfortably. "No more Mr.

Nice Guy," Ditka grunted. Besides owning a roster of all-pros, and a 10-year contract, the greatest asset a coach can have is a sense of confidence in his ways and means. Ditka sold more than a few autobiographies on the promise that "the worst thing you can do in this business is to try to be somebody you're not. I can only be myself." Just about a year removed from his heart attack, and just in time for Halloween, Mike Ditka has decided to dress up as Mike Ditka, once and for all. recently until Sunday, when it was so.

forceful. Ditka then made sure knew that a game ball had been awarded, to Richard Dent, who amazingly skipped Cleveland's frolic after being attacked by a killer lunch wagon. Ditka can control, almost everything about the Bears, but! when the coach is away watching films; sandwich carts tend to play. It js wonder, in the wake of this disaster, thar Ditka hasn't banned eating throughout-Lake Forest situation rooms. Before leaving the weekly media" monologue in disgust, Ditka Bears fans for their sleepy Sunday; display, again a recycled theme.

They've, been spanked by Ditka before, as rW Tomczak, as have assistant coaches, that" doesn't make life with the Bears serene' but that's why Ditka was hired in the first place, which is where they've finished for five straight years. He doesn't want peace, he wants war. Kennard on verge of returning Released Eason no patsy won't play for nothing Cardinals Notes I fry! 9 NFL Briefs Tony Eason Reluctant to stay with Patriots "only for the purpose of being trade bait." By Mark Armijo The Arizona Republic Although Coach Gene Stallings didn't shed any light Tuesday, center Derek Kennard, who entered an in-patient treatment center for alcohol abuse two weeks ago, could be back in uniform today, sources said. It has been reported earlier that Kennard would rejoin the team this week, but Stallings would not confirm that. "I read and hear rumors from time to time," Stallings said.

"Hopefully, we'll get Derek back, but until we see him, I'm not really going to count on him." The likelihood of Kennard returning grew more certain Tuesday when a roster spot was created after Tuesday's release of free-agent safety Michael Downs. "I hated to have to do that (waive Downs)," Stallings said. "I'm very fond of Mike. He came in and helped us out. He gave us some credibility.

"But I can't afford to carry, at this point, more than three safeties." Downs was signed after the third game. Oldest bird Donald Davidson, 91, who is the oldest living former Cardinal, will attend Sunday's game against the New York Giants at Sun Devil Stadium. Davidson, who lives in Green Valley, south of Tucson, played one season for the Racine Cardinals in 1917. Racine became one of 11 charter members of the American Professional Football League, the forerunner Stallings said. "I think his confidence! is at a high level.

That's a real, compliment to Al. "We brought in a lot of kickers (in; the preseason) and gave a lot of people an opportunity to beat him out. I never heard him grumbling. He just went out there every week" and accepted the challenge." Del Greco was 12 of 21 last season." Ticket sales up The Cardinals' two-game winning streak apparently has made a dent at the ticket window. There are 28,841 tickets remaining-for Sunday's game, which is fewer than for any of the three previous home games.

The Giants might have something to do with that. New York leads the NFC East with a 7-1 mark, one only two teams in the league' with only one loss. If the game is not sold out by 2 p.m. Thursday, it will be blacked out locally. Quick kicks Wide receiver J.T.

Smith continues to lead the NFL in pass receptions with 60, 12 more than Buffalo's Andre Reed Defensive tackle Gary Hadd (knee) is listed as questionable, but Stallings said there's a possibility he could begin practicing this week. Hadd has missed the past five games. Stallings said wide receiver Roy Green (shoulder) is out for Sunday. The Associated Press Tony Eason, who sank from starting quarterback to fourth stringer in 19 days, was released Tuesday, after resisting the Patriots' proposal that he work for free. Owner Victor Kiam contended that he had agreed last spring to pay $1.1 million this season and $1.25 million in 1990 on the basis that Eason would be the starter.

When that changed, Kiam wanted Eason's salary to change, too. With the season half over, Eason already had earned half his annual salary, $550,000. New England propose! that for the rest of the year, Eason be paid his weekly salary of $68,750 only in weeks in which he plays at least 50 percent of a game. Otherwise, he would get nothing. Patriots General Manager Pat Sullivan said Tuesday the team was reluctant last week to release Eason without getting anything in exchange.

But Sullivan added that the team decided that Eason, a first-round draft choice in 1983, would have "very limited" trade value. The team decided Tuesday morning to release him even if he accepted the pay cut, Sullivan said. There was little chance of that. Eason was "resistant to the concept" of staying with the Patriots "only for the purpose of being trade bait at the end of the season," said Leigh Steinberg, his agent. "I would have to disagree" with Sullivan's assessment of Eason's trade of the NFL, in 1920.

Davidson was a 5-foot-10, 163-pound defensive end. "That was considered small even in my day, but I could hit pretty hard," Davidson said. Davidson and 10 members of his family will be guests of the Cardinals. A suite will be made available for their use. "This is the biggest shock for me," Davidson said.

"Never in heaven's name did I think such a thing would I'm! almost embarrassed to say I'm more of a Chicago Bears fan." However, Davidson, who lived in Chicago until three years ago, said his allegiance could be swayed. "I'm a Chicagoan, but now that the I Cardinals are in Arizona, I'll become i more of a fan," he said. Approaching record I Al Del Greco has converted eight straight field-goal attempts, which is two less than the club record held by Jim Bakken, who kicked 10 straight twice in his career. Del Greco, who is 12 of 13 this season, could have been perfect had a penalty not wiped out a successful 42-yard kick earlier this season. On a subsequent 47-yard attempt, he missed.

"I mentioned in a squad meeting the other day that if (Del Greco) is going to kick a 30-yard field goal or a 45-yard field goal, I feel totally confident he's going to make it," value, he added. "I think (the Patriots) clearly could have worked out a very interesting trade in the off-season." Eason couldn't be reached for comment. Steinberg said Eason was "disappointed" but "excited" about the chance to start over. If a team claims Eason during the 24-hour waiver period, it would have to assume the remainder of his contract. Steinberg didn't expect that to happen.

If he clears waivers today, he could make a deal at what probably would be a lower salary. Steinberg said there is "no question" teams will want Eason this season. However, Eason may wait until the season ends for better proposals. "We're looking to find him the best long-term situation," Steinberg said. Eason, who turned 30 on Oct.

8, is the third first-round choice cut by New England this season, which is only half over. Center Trevor Matich, the 1985 pick, was waived Sept. 6 and running back Reggie Dupard, the 1986 pick, was released on Oct. 24. Colts Linebacker O'Brien Alston was charged with drunken driving and public intoxication after an auto accident that left him hospitalized, authorities said.

It was the second time in three weeks that a member of the Colts has been arrested. Defensive end Ezra Johnson faces a Nov. 7 court date on charges of drunken driving, speeding, and carrying a loaded .357 Magnum revolver without a license. He was arrested Oct. 10.

Alston, who was lost for the season because of a hypcrextension of his left knee in an Oct. 1 game with the Jets, was listed in satisfactory condition at Methodist Hospital after the accident Monday. "He had some lower leg injuries," said an Indiana State Police spokesman. Further information on the nature of Alston's accident-related injuries was not available. Bears Tailback Mark Green will be out of action 4-6 weeks because of a partial ligament tear in his right knee.

No surgery will be required. Green, a rookie from Notre Dame, ranked fourth in the NFC with 12 punt returns for 118 yards. He also returned 10 kickoffs for 224 yards. "There appears to be no place on the Suns' roster or that of any other NBA team for Garrett, a 6-foot-10 forward-center from Indiana. However, there is a deal awaiting Garrett in the Italian League, if he wants it.

Garrett probably will be waived today or Thursday and receive his $190,000 guaranteed salary. If he clears waivers, Garrett could play in Italy. He would reimburse the Suns 50 patent of any salary he made above the NBA minimum $150,000. J'We have advised Dean there is an opportunity for him in Italy, and at this point he knows what the situation is here," said Suns President Jerry Colangelo. The waiving of Garrett would leave the Suns with 14 players, two over the 12-man limit they must reach by Thursday night.

It is likely the Suns will place rookies Ricky Blanton (knee) and Mike Morrison (hand) on the injured list to reach the limit. Guard Micheal Williams would be on the active roster, perhaps to occasionally showcase him for trading purposes. There was heavy interest in Williams from pro scouts during preseason games. Note Starting point guard Kevin Johnson (bruised back) received ice and ultrasound treatments Tuesday and did not practice. He is expected to be ready for the opener Friday night against Golden State.
