"We're very pleased with this new location," said Craig Jackson, co-partner and spokesman for Barrett-Jackson Auction. "We feel it provides all the amenities with a level of comfort, style and sophistication reflective of the automobiles being auctioned." Horseworld was built by Scottsdale and designed specifically for auctions and equestrian events. The 356-acre facility cost $8 million and includes 80 acres of parking. The cars for the 1989 auction in January will be displayed on 10 acres of Horseworld's polo fields. The auction previously has been at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Higher incomes, lower operating costs, a 45 percent increase in government payments and a modest rise in farm-product sales contributed to the improvement, the department's Economic Research Service said.

The 176-page analysis said net income in 1987 reached $38 billion after adjusting for inflation, the highest level since the mid-1970s and "was on a par with that of the 1950s and 1960s." It did not forecast 1988 financial returns or assess the impact of this year's drought. In 1987, rising land values, which represent 70 percent of all farm assets, and lower debt boosted the equity, or net worth, of farmers as of Jan. 1, to $571 billion from $537 billion a year earlier, the report said. That reversed a six-year decline, "The most dramatic farm financial change in the past few years has been the improvement in the solvency position of farms," it said. Solvency, or the ability to pay debts, one measure of financial health in the farm sector.

Others are liquidity, or making payments when due, and profitability, or net income. "Higher net farm income in 1987 helped farmers reduce or pay off debt and provided more farms with enough capital to avoid new debt financing than in previous years," the report said. "Asset values rose 3 percent over those of 1986, while debt fell 8 percent, to $143 billion, in 1987 (the fourth annual decline in a row), leaving the sector in the best position at any time in the 1980s to meet debt-service obligations." Nearly 80 percent of the nation's farms were profitable in 1987, up from 70 percent in 1986. The report said that nearly 44 percent of all farms were free of debt at the beginning of 1988, compared with less than 39 percent a year eariier.
