Prince Mohammed, the eldest of the surviving sons of the founder of the Saudi monarchy, also was called Abu al-Sharrain, or "father of two evils," because of his fiery temper. He remained the most-respected personality in the house of Saud, and even the kings used to refer to him to settle domestic disputes. In July 1977, Prince Mohammed ordered the execution of his granddaughter, Princess Mishael, and her lover, Khalid Muhallal, a nephew of the then-Saudi ambassador to Lebanon. The execution was ordered for adultery because Mishael was married to a royal cousin. She was shot, and Muhallal was beheaded.

The executions caused a stir in Western Europe and the United States and were the basis for a widely watched British TV show, The Death of a Princess. Marian Welch, 88; editor of Birch Society papers NEEDHAM, Mass. Marian Welch, the editor of two publications for the ultraconservative John Birch Society, which was founded by her late husband, has died at age 88. Mrs. Welch died Tuesday at Glover Memorial Hospital in Needham, a Boston suburb.

Mrs. Welch, who graduated from Wellesley College in 1922, was editor of the society's weekly newspapers, The New American and Review of the News. The society was founded in 1958 by 12 men, including her husband, Robert, and named after a young U.S. missionary who was killed in China in 1954. The group is based in Belmont, where the Welches lived for 40 years.

Robert Welch died in 1985. The John Birch Society first gained national attention when it accused former President Eisenhower and then-Secretary of State John Foster Dulles of being implicated in a Communist plot to take over the U.S. government in the 1950s.
