am 62 THE A PUBLIC THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 1988 00 hinle schooD gete 0110 cniDDioED By BILL DONOVAN Special for The Republic CHINLE Officials of the Chinle Public School District said Wednesday they were surprised to learn the district will receive a $10 million federal grant for a new high schcoL "We were told just last week that only $3 million was available for this district," Superintendent Raymond Aguilera said Wednesday. Federal education officials said funds have been allocated to the Chinle district from other projects, which either have been scaled down or postponed. Aguilera said the new building, which will provide classrooms for up to 1,500 students, is projected to cost $20 million. The rest of the money will come from excess funds that the district has in the Apache County treasury and by taxation during the next five years. Located in the center of the Navajo Reservation, the district's high school was built more than 20.

years ago for an expected student enrollment of about 300. In the 1960s, however, Chinle became one of the reservation's major growth areas, and student enrollment now is more than 1,000. Most of the' students are being taught in portable classrooms. The new high school may be overcrowded even before it opens, the superintendent said. Meanwhile, a meeting was held Wednesday in Gallup, N.M., between Bureau of Indian Affairs and Navajo Tribe officials to figure out what to do about structural problems in classrooms at the Many Farms Boarding School, about 10 miles north of Chinle.

Despite an appropriation of more than $3 million last year to renovate the two classroom buildings, BIA engineers said last week the buildings may not. be able to be repaired. One option being considered by the BIA is to use the Many Farms facility only as a dormitory and bus the 600 pupils to Chinle for classes. Most of the 25,000 Arizona Public Service Co. customers had power restored by 8:30 p.m., but about 15,000 SRP customers were in the dark late Wednesday.

Only a trace of rain was recorded at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix, but heavy, driving rain was reported in several other parts of the Valley, and pea-6ize hail fell in Apache Junction. Lightning and heavy rain were reported at Scottsdale Community College, and lightning set three palm trees on fire in the 8500 block of East Orange Blossom Lane. Winds reportedly also blew a storage shed 200 yards from the 4800 block of East Thomas Road. The storm hit Phoenix on a hot and humid day. Humidity readings ranged from 17 to 43 percent, and the high temperature at Sky Harbor Airport was 107.

The high downtown was 106. At 6 p.m., the temperature at Sky Harbor still was 107, but by 7 p.m., it had plummeted to 88. Thunderstorms rumbled also across northern and central Arizona Wednesday. One storm shortly before 5 p.m. flooded part of Liter-state 17 in the Verde Valley.

Strong thunderstorms were reported in Globe and over the lakes along the Salt River. In Tucson, 36 mph winds were reported at the airport as strong thunderstorms hit the city. A lightning strike set fire to a palm tree in Tucson. Isolated thunderstorms are expected in higher elevations today, but most Arizonans can expect sunshine, the weather service said. 4J k'4 crossed police lines too close to the downed power lines, police said.

"I tried to be real nice to him, but he refused to listen to me," Mesa police Officer Lynn Bray said. "He kept coming closer and closer) to the power lines until he was almost on the street" I The Salt River Project lines were' expected to be down until this morning, spokeswoman Susanne Tso said, and the intersrdion of Guadalupe and Country Club was expected to be closed until after rush hour this morning.
