The monthly Arbitrends ratings report issued Tuesday had the station No. 1 with a 10.8 percent share of listeners. Jumping into double digits for the first time was the runner-up, top 40 outlet KZZP-FM, with a 10.2 share. (KNIX-EM had an 11.0 share in the previous report, while KZZP-FM had a 9.7 share.) The latest statistics represent listener-ship during the final four weeks of the winter rating period and the first eight weeks of the 1 2-week spring period.

Climbing to third place was newstalk KTAR with an 8.7 (up from an 8.2). Easy listening KMEO-FM rose to fourth place from fifth while maintaining a 7.3 share, but rock-album KUPD dropped to fifth, from third with a 6.9 share (down from 8.6). Rounding out the top 10 were: easy listening KQYT, 6.3 (down from 7.3); contemporary KKLT, 4.8 (4.8); oldies KOOL-FM, 4.4 (4.2); oldies KSLX, 4.3 (4.4); and contemporary KLZI, 3.6 (3.7). been received and accepted by Caz Broadcasting. Caz Broadcasting, whose principal owners are Paul Williams and Detroit Lions football player Leonard Thompson, bought the station out of bankruptcy court for $470,000 in June 1984.

Originally an affiliate of the Children's Radio Network, with programming geared to the preteen set, KSUN switched to jazz in April. KSUN also serves as the broadcast home for the Phoenix Firebirds baseball team. The sale is not expected to affect the relationship between the station and the club. "We are going to keep the call letters, and we are enthusiastic about the opportunity to work with the Phoenix Firebirds," said Eric Hauenstein, president of TransCom Communications. "We'd love to have an AM (station) in Phoenix.

We hope we have a deal." The sale is contingent upon the approval of the Federal Communications Commission. Transfer of ownership isn't likely to occur until fall. Hauenstein said no decision has been made regarding what format will be employed by KSUN, adding that "four or five alternatives are under consideration." The expected shake-up in the sports department at KTVK-TV (Channel 3) has begun with the hiring of two sportscasters. News director Phil Alvidrez has hired David Sparks to replace Bill Mosley on the 5 p.m. weekday edition of NewsChannel 3 and picked Ronnie Duncan to take Ken Adelson's place on the weekend newscasts.

Mosley will stay with the ABC affiliate as a feature reporter. Adelson is expected to leave when his contract expires in January. Sparks, who will start sometime in, August, is host of the syndicated game show Crosswits. He has co-hosted P.M. Magazine shows in Seattle and Dallas, and the Eye on Chicago program at Chicago's ABC-owned WLS-TV.

Alvidrez said he expects Sparks, who. played collegiate and semiprofessional hockey, to bring "a dimension to our sports department Phoenix doesn't have now." Sparks was hired for his sportscasting ability, not because of his connection with Crosswits, Alvidrez said. He said it will be, up to Channel 3 programmer Sue Schwartz to decide if there is a place in the daytime schedule for the game show and whether it warrants being picked up. CBS affiliate KTSP-TV (Channel 10). between now and January, Alvidrez said Channel 3 will release him from his contract.

Alvidrez was unable to say what will become of 6 and 10 p.m. weekday sports-caster Ron Swoboda, whose contract expires at year's end. "We've been looking. It's no secret. Ron knows that," he said.

Also joining NewsChannel 3 next month as reporteranchor will be Tom McNamara of WRAL-TV in Raleigh, N.C. Alvidrez; said McNamara may take Tom Olson's place on the midday newscast In other moves at Channel 3, anchor Frank Robertson appeared on his last newscast at 10 p.m. Monday and will join Miami's WSVN-TV next week. Incoming anchor Cameron Harper is in town and will start Monday on the 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts.

Alvidrez said the plan is for Harper to handle those two shows, but added, "We may do some shifting once all the players are here." KSUN SALE TransCom Communications, owner of contemporary KLZI (FM 99.9), apparently has reached agreement with the owners of KSUN (1400 AM) to the jazz station for $1.2 million. KSUN general manager Bill Elliott said 'Tuesday a letter of intent from TransCom Communications to buy the station has originally held an option for Crosswits in the fall, but programmer Gary Rockey said the option was allowed to lapse in mid-May, long before it became known that Channel 3 was courting Sparks. Had Channel 10 still held rights to the game show, the decision by Channel 3 to hire Sparks would have prompted KTSP-TV to jettison the program. "That would have iced it anyway," Rockey said. Duncan will join Channel 3 in late July from ABC affiliate WTNH-TV in New Haven, Conn.

Regarding Adelson, Alvidrez said, "We've let Ken know we aren't going to renew his contract. He's still working in our sports department He won't be anchoring."
