San Sabft Jan. 29, One week ago, we were locked in a teeth-chattering cold spell. Today, I'm stealing glances toward the ancient peach tree, to see if I detect any buds. It's blossoms are the harbinger of spring on the block. The tree trunk, with a life span of at least three decades, is gone, only sprouts from the roots remain.

Those sprouts are stayers. Its fruit is about thimble size. This tree is a positive thinker; it never gives up; it is living on hope. Soon it will put out buds, and I'll again see nature at work in the spring. KEEP SAN SABA BEAUTIFUL! We traditionally an annual clean up campaign in the town.

Now i the time to get started, before foliage gets out. Let's begin by getting participation from youth of San all they are going to inherit the mess. "Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children," said Walt Disney. ()h, the personal carelessness of some of the children! What, can be done to make them want to put the candy wrapper, kleenex, drinking can, into a waste basket or litter container? It is said that it takes eight months for a kleen ex to deteriorate, and costs from 10 to GO cents to pick a single piece of litter (man- hours, machines, etc.) WATER AND AIR POLLUTION, hour over and over, and shrug it off by thinking "that doesn't apply to us is in far away cities." It WE NEED clean cotton at The NEW'S STAJl does apply to our very own town. Everybody needs to be a part of this cleanup campaign.

School children who want to "protest," form a protest movement a- guinst ugliness, at home, in Mill Pond Park, streets and roadways. How the sanitation men of San Saba must dread the spring season because of extra burden of hauling debris, but you never hear them complain. The City needs to rid itself of some big things, like discarded refrigerators, water heaters. We have been fortunate that no child has suffocated in one of these abandoned refrigerators. Let's have a neighborly block by block cleanup.

DON'T READ THIS, unless you are a viewer of 'As the World Turns." For a doozy of a murder mystery, we have it going. Question is, Who killed Dr. Michael Shea, the casanova of the M.D.'s? Was it Misi Adams, Tom, Hank, surely not Lisa? For a bang-up murder trial, we will soon have it It will be Uncle Don for the defense of poor Tom, the wounded Vietnam veteran, who was first to get the handcuffs. Thought for the Week: believe in my community, I believe in her people, her boys and girls. "I will endeavor to make this a more beautiful place in which to live.

"I believe in the preservation of our parks. I believe in trees and grass instead of ash heaps and tin cans; flowers instead of Club Creed. Glad you read this! ff- SHOP AT THE A'. Curtis Johnsons Furniture Shop U07 W. St.
