a "-aji ALL EDITIONS The Arizona Republic Thursday, February 16, 1084 Misguided 'Reckless' crashes despite young star's energy Movies Marsha McCreadie reckless An MGMUA release directed by James Folley; written by Chris Columbus, photography by, Michael Ballhaus. Cast: Aidan Quinn, Daryl Hannah, Kenneth McMillan, Cliff De Young. Rated R. James Dean did it all years ago, but that was in another (pre-punk) country. Youth on the run can be a whole lot of fun, but Reckless, by first-time director James Folley, is a particularly dreary affair.

Possibly without meaning to, it has picked up some of the depressing surroundings of the small mill town from which its two protaganists, or at least one of them, want to escape. In a lot of ways, Reckless is reminiscent of movies made for TV. There's not really any plot, just a couple kids and a formulaic business about a working-class boy and an upper-class girl; it's rockers and collegiates once more. Aidan Quinn, in his first starring role, does have an interestingly petulant quality. Quinn looks kind of like a new-wave Mikhail Baryshnikov.

If he gets better scripts to work with, a new male star may be in the making. He does have raw energy, especially in a scene at the high school prom where he puts on a punk record and does a more angry dance than his cheerleader-type date is used to. The scene is a visual rhetoric of violence, and he's good in it. Daryl Hannah is boring to watch, however, as a blond Miss Goody Two-Shoes who decides to take a walk on the wild side. None of this would matter much if not for the intriguing photography of Michael Ballhaus.

In this sense, anyway, Reckless is a pretty tone poem on smoke, industrialism and the claustrophobia of small towns. Ever since the film Flashdance, the look of heavy industry has proved interesting to film makers, although, of course, painters have been there for awhile (the paintings of Charles Burchfield and the post-industrial landscapes of upstate New York, for example). SECOND OPINION From Catherine Rambeau, Detroit Free Press: "Attention, parents: Reckless is the kind of movie the Moral Majority warns us about. It is steamy, it is sexy and it has moments that border on soft-core pornography. Your teen-agers are going to want to see it: Whether you like it or not, they probably will." ininmr i- Newcomer Aidan who stars as Johnny Rourke in Reckless, is a star in the making.

It can drive you crazy if you think someone else is scoring. East ruffed the second spade.

"Just make your contract." East returned his last trump, and South found it impossible to ruff his three low spades with dummy's two remaining trumps. Down one. After winning the first spade trick with the ace, South should lead a low spade instead of the king. Now South surely can ruff his two remaining low spades even if the defenders manage to take a second trump out of the dummy. South can then draw trumps and cash the king of spades in safety.

This stodgy line of play gives South no reason to grouse about failing to get to a grand slam, but it does give him ample compensation: 1,430 points on the scorepad. QUESTION: You hold AK643 VAK872 8 A5. Partner opens with one diamond; the next player passes. What do you say? ANSWER: Bid two spades. You have 18 high-card points, but the books say when you have neither strong support for partner's suit nor a self-sufficient suit of your own, you need 19 high-card points for an immediate jump shift.

However, unless you start with a jump bid, you never will be able to show the full power of this hand.
