Use sports. KNAZ-TV (Channel 2) in Flagstaff took that approach earlier this month by introducing the 15-minute Sports Final magazine show at 10:15 p.m.

Sundays. Before Jan. 3, the NBC affiliate aired a half-hour newscast at 10 p.m. Sundays. However, it wasn't an easy task, especially in a small city.

"We don't get NBC Nightly News fed to us on Sunday nights, so we had a hard time filling it visually," explained news director Kris Wilson. Mike Fernandez, who provides the sports news on weekday newscasts, then came up with the idea for a sports magazine show. Sports Final was the result, which he co-hosts with Kevin McCabe. "It had been in the back of our mind. With the new year, we just decided to do it," said McCabe, who was in Phoenix Monday.

Sports Final takes a casual approach. No spartan news set with anchors dressed in jackets and ties. The two hosts appear on a living room set, relaxing in easy chairs while wearing open-necked shirts and sweaters. "We don't want to be ESPN and sit on a set," said McCabe, referring to the 24-hour cable Entertainment and Sports Programming Network channel. "We want it to be Channel 2." McCabe, a graduate of Northern Arizona University, has been with KNAZ-TV since May.

Fernandez, an Ohio University graduate, has worked at Channel 2 for more than a year. During Fernandez's tenure, the station was taken over by the Capitol Broadcasting which is based in Mississippi. "We've really tried to improve the image. We have two enemies," McCabe said. One, the station is continually "playing down KOAI-TV," which was the designation for the station under previous management.

"People laughed at it for 10 years. If you put out a bad precedent, you have a lot of people not liking it," he said. The other "enemy" is Phoenix's television news operations, which put out slicker programs, use videotape rather than old-fashioned film and have "live" capability. hostilities grew strong between IfflgjA two groups.
