Considering the buildup the video received, though, the production is a letdown, consisting largely of choreographed dance scenes not unlike those found in Pat Benetar's Love Is a Battle-Held clip or Jackson's own Beat It video. MTV has received exclusive use of the Thriller video and is running it into the ground. While the makeup and special effects are superb, this minifilm is an otherwise ordinary video.

An especially irritating aspect is the tacky use of credits at its conclusion. Celebrity roasts are known for biting humor, and Friday night's hilarious bash honoring KOY morning personality Bill Heywood's 25th anniversary in broadcasting was filled with that expected brand of humor. Rita Davenport, who hosts Open House on KPHO-TV (Channel 5), was the consensus champion in the ribbing department, effectively mixing her Tennessee accent with a few naughty words in ribbing the honoree. However, the nicest touch was supplied by emcee Pat McMahon, who took time to A staff shake-up rocked country KJJJ (910 AM) on Friday, with morning man Jack Randall and news director Bill Rawson being fired by general manager Chuck Artigue. Hired to take Randall's place is former KJJJ announcer Bobby Butler, who has been doing mornings at oldies KOOL (FM 94.5).

"I'm going to try to restructure the whole AM station," explained Artigue, who also oversees country outlet KEZC UFM 92.3). "I've got to put Bobby in first; "that's the first step." Randall, who had worked for KJJJ for "slightly more than a year, had his final air Friday. Butler will start Dec 12. In Artigue's mind, KJJJ needs a little more sparkle. "I'm going to try to recreate what KJ radio was years ago a real fun country radio station," he said.

The firing of Randall and Rawson did not surprise the morning man. "We both knew it was coming. They would not give a reason," Randall said, speculating that budget considerations and his close-" ness to former general manager Gary Fries were the reasons behind the dismissals. Artigue has not named a news director to replace Rawson, but he has hired two news people. Jess Peterson of newstalk KTAR (620 AM) will be heard in the morning on KJJJ, while Kathy Meris of contemporary KOPA (FM 100.7) will provide afternoon news on KEZC.

According to the most recent Arbitron ratings, KJJJ ranks 15th among Valley stations with a 2.6 share of audience. Meanwhile, KOOL-FM general manager Bill Smith is looking for someone to replace Butler, but may already be close to making the selection. Michael Jackson's megabuck, 14-minute video Thriller had its national premiere on MTV Friday and has been repeated every four hours or so since then.
