Dense fog and freezing drizzle hovered over the West, causing dozens of traffic accidents. Snow fell from Minnesota to New York. Williston, N.D., and Syracuse, N.Y., received an inch of snow, and 4 inches covered St. Cloud, Minn.

More than an inch of snow fell on southern Wisconsin. Trucks and cars slid off highways throughout the midsection of Illinois. Rain pounded northern Texas and eastern Oklahoma. Thunderstorms spat heavy rain at the Louisiana coast and southeastern coast of Texas, and a flash-flood watch was posted for much of southern Louisiana. More than an inch of rain doused Lake Charles, La.

Half an inch fell at Dallas and McAlester, Okla. Winds gusted to 40 mph in western Texas and to 30 mph in parts of Kansas and Nebraska. Dense fog plagued California, Nevada, Oregon and Utah. Fog and light drizzle froze on some roads in northern Nevada, causing numerous traffic accidents. The fog has disrupted traffic at Reno International Airport for a week, although on some days, flights arrived and departed after a cloud-seeding airplane dropped dry ice that created holes in the cloud cover.

The fog caused near-zero visibil ity in Tooele, Utah. Freezing drizzle! and the poor visibility caused several accidents on Utah roads. A tractor-trailer rig overturned near, Salt Lake City, resulting in minor, injuries. Gale-force winds lashed thet' Washington coast. Ice jama prompted flood warnings for the.

Similkameen, Okanoban and Methow rivers in the north-central part of the state. Gaines, of Phoenix, was born in Mallard, Texas, and moved to Arizona 29 years ago from Oklahoma. Mary Jane Roush Mary Jane Roush, 57, of 5449 rVL Glenrosa, an audiologist, died Jan. 7, 1984, at Good Samaritan Medical Center.

Mrs. Roush was born in Portland, and moved to Arizona 52 years ago. She was former president of the Maryvale Women's Club, former director of the Miss Maryvale and Miss Phoenix Pageant, former women's page editor of the Maryvale Star and member of the Hearing Aid Society. Survivors include daughters, Laura Zinn, Peggy Priest and Beverly Roush; sons, William Ronald and Robert; mother, Lucille Hunter; two sisters; two brothers and seven grandchildren. Services will be 10 a.m.

Knutsen MESA Kenneth R. Knutsen, a chemical engineer for the water-quality division of the state Department of Health Services, died Jan.

8, 1984, at Good Samaritan Medical Center, Phoenix. Mr. Knutsen, of Mesa, was bom hi Reeder, N.D., and moved to Arizona 11 years ago from Colorado. He received a bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering from the Montana School of Mines and served in the Air Force in the Korean War. Survivors include his brother, David; a niece and two nephews.

She was a longtime volunteer at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center and member of the Fairview Garden Club. 9, 1984, at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. Mr. Murriil, of 1709 N. Seventh was born in Petersburg, W.Va., and moved to Arizona from New York in 1942, one year after he retired.

He was a journalist for 20 years, and directed the news coverage of the trial in the 1932 kidnapping and slaying of the Charles Lindbergh baby for the Telegram. Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sisters and a brother. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m Wednesday at A.L. Moore Sons, 333 W. Adams.

Mrs. Sanchez, of Peoria, was born in Tempe. She was a volunteer for the Community Action Program and Boys' Club of Peoria. She served on the board of the Peoria Parks and Recreation Department and was a member of the Peoria Housing Board. Dettinger MESA Albert F. Dettinger, 86, a retired engineer for the Ford Motor died Jan. 8, 1984, at Mesa Lutheran Hospital. Mr. Dettinger, of Mesa, was bom in York, and moved to Arizona 14 years ago from Detroit.

He was a 50-year Mason. Survivors include his wife, Nellie; daughters, Junita Forge and Vivian Harper; three sisters; three brothers; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Chapel of Prayer Funeral Home, 108 N. 56th St.

Art E. Burnham Art E. Burnham, 66, of 812 E. Corte Oro, purchasing agent for Ed Holderness Builders Supply, died Jan. 7, 1984, at St.

Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. Mr. Burnham was born in Webster City, Iowa, and moved to Arizona, 28 years ago from Mason City, Iowa. He served in the Army in World War II. Survivors include his wife, Peggy, daughters, Donna Aldredge and Sharlene Kaza-koff; son, Arvid; a sister; two brothers and eight grandchildren.

Snow, 79, who had: been department chief for Western Electric in Chicago for 38 years, died Jan. 9, 1984, at Valley Lutheran Hospital. Mr. Snow, of 5446 E. Colby, was born in Princeton, and moved to Arizona from Chicago 20 years ago, when he retired.

Survivors include his wife, Jule; son, Norman; a sister; and two grandchildren. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church, 142 N. Date Mesa. Chapel of Prayer Funeral Home, Mesa, made arrangements.

Glenn J. Heathcote SUN CITY Glenn J. Heathcote, 81, who had been a collector for the Internal Revenue Service, died Jan. 8, 1984, at his Sun City residence. Mr.

Heathcote was born in Monterey, and moved to Arizona in 1974 from Milwaukee, He was a Mason and member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Luke Air Force Base NCO CLub, Sun City Square Club and Bell Recreation Center. Survivors include his wife, Helen; and a stepbrother. Services will be 11 a.m. today at Menke Funeral Home, 12420 N. 103rd Ave.

Margaret Strickland Margaret "Peggy" Strickland, 58, who had been a legal secretary for 12 years, died Jan. 8, 1984, at Good Samaritan Medical Center. Mrs. Strickland, of Phoenix, was bom in Canada and moved to Arizona 32 yeans ago from Toronto.

Wednesday. John Chestna SUN CITY John Chestna, 73, who had owned a tire company in Massachusetts, died Jan. 7, 1984, at Boswell Memorial Hospital. Mr. Chestna, of Sun City, was bom in Bridgewater, and moved to Arizona in 1971.

John Lee Jacko CHANDLER John Lee Jacko, 76 labor contractor, died Jan. 4, 1984, at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Phoenix. Mr. Jacko, of Chandler, was bom lg Jefferson Springs, and moved Mi Arizona 35 years ago. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II.
