REPUBLIC The Arizona Republic Tuesday, August 9, 1983 Griffey belts slam; Yanks sweep Jays American League Football staff at ASU greets freshmen today ByBobEger Republic Staff TEMPE Preparation for the 1983 football season begins at Arizona State University today when freshmen report to coach Darryl Rogers and his staff. The freshmen will undergo orientation, physical examinations, conditioning and evaluation through Friday, when they will be joined by the rest of the Sun Devil squad. ASU will conduct its annual media picture day Saturday morning. The Sun Devils will leave Saturday afternoon for Camp Tonto-zona, where they will begin two-a-day drills next Monday. Rogers said there has been one defection from the 23 freshmen who signed letters of intent last spring.

Glen Hill, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound running back from Santa Cruz High in Santa Cruz, signed a professional baseball contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. Hill, Toronto's ninth-round draft choice, signed in July and was assigned to Medicine Hat, Alberta, in the rookie Pioneer League. He was playing center field and hitting .255 with two home runs and 12 RBI after 19 games. Another player who won't be joining the Sun Devils this fall is Dale Sveum, the much-publicized quarterback from Pinole Valley High in Pinole, who signed a letter of intent with ASU in 1982 but then signed a professional baseball contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. Sveum indicated last spring that he wanted to give up professional baseball to play football at ASU.

However, under pressure from the Brewers, he agreed to return for the 1983 season. He said at that time, however, that he might enroll at ASU this fall. Sveum has spent this season playing third base for the Brewers' Stockton, club in the Class A California League. His batting average was below .200 much of the season, but he now is at .251 with five home runs and a team-leading 58 RBI in 111 games. "I talked to Dale recently and told him I felt he had an obligation to the Brewers to give baseball a fair shot and to give them a return on their bonus money," Rogers said.

ASU8 freshmen class includes four players who saw action last Saturday in the Arizona Coaches Association All-Star football game in Flagstaff. They are linemen Richard Bear of Phoenix Moon Valley, Shawn Patterson of Tempe McClintock and Danny Villa of Nogales, and tight end Randall McDaniel of Avondale Agua Fria. fiepuhlic Sports Wires NEW YORK Ken Griffey wal-toped a grand slam in the first inning and-Don Baylor followed with a solo fchot, powering the New York Yankees to an. 11-3 victory and a sweep of Monday's twi-night double-header with faltering Toronto Blue Jays. 0scar TJamble drove in three runs, two" oh Ttis" seventh homer, and Dave Winfield and Butch Wynegar each had two RBI as the Yankees won the opener, 8-3, behind the eight-hit pitching of Ron Guidry (13-7).

AL DAVIS "Things are pretty quiet these days with only a few legal actions and a couple of heavy feuds to maintain.

I need a new challenge. As baseball commissioner I would concentrate on the recruitment of good players, just as I did when I was commissioner of the American Football League. "The trick is to get them alone so they can see the truth plainly. If you want to compete for great athletes, you can't just hold a draft and expect them to come to sign. You've got to lock 'em up with the amenities of life until you can get their signature when they're in a weakened condition." REGGIE JACKSON "How come a player has never been commissioner? I was giving this a lot of thought the other day and it struck me that baseball should put its most charismatic player right out in front.

He should be a famous slugger with an I.Q. of over 150, be able to speak Spanish, relate to black players, with a college background and experience in business. He should have a catchy name, be instantly recognized, and not be afraid to speak his mind in public. There's only one man who fits that description, of course." DON KING "The trouble with baseball is that it's too predictable, with schedules up months in advance. We need challenge games, match games, championship games.

That way you'd work up some drama. I'd be glad to book the Yankees and the Braves into Vegas for a weekend, for just a little cut on the side for myself." That's the first wave of applications. The best news is that no journalists have applied. They're too valuable to baseball right where they are.
